125 or do my test?

Hey there guys,

I'm in a predicaaament. I'm learning to drive at the moment but had a geared 50 before I hit 17, and as I'm going to be sharing the car with the sibling I'm feeling getting another bike, preferably with some more power.

I occasionally loved my 50, had a reallllyy bad experience to begin with as the place I bought it from were a joke and it ended up having a full engine rebuild etc., but it was so annoying going from 1st to 5th gear just going around a roundabout while really straining it just to keep up with traffic, even in 6th.

Anyway, I don't know whether to get a 125cc or just do my test? I'm not made of money so I don't really know which is going to work out better, so thought I'd bow down to your advice

Are 125s okay or do they have no power too? If I did my test, should I do a 3-day intensive course or just do it myself?

I think 125's are fine for pottering around in traffic, but of course will show their limitations out on the open road.
I use a 125 for my everyday commute and it's fine.
Plenty enough to keep with the flow, and of course light and agile enough for filtering.
Depends what sort of riding you're going to be doing.
I couldn't stick with a 125 for more than an hour or so's riding, but I'm sure plenty can.

You are going to have to take your test sooner or later anyway unless you want to have a cbt every 2 years.
I bought a 125 and took my test on that and it's great for riding around the countryside and in towns but just wish I had a bit more power for overtaking confidently. To be honest I'm counting the days for my 2 yrs restriction to be over

get a 125 and then get a few miles under your belt and then take your test and sell the 125 on for what you bought it

I still have my 50, use it every now and then. I guess I might aswell get the test done, but then I still need a 33bhp bike and might as well stick with a 125cc heh. Think a '98 R1'd push that a bit .

I'd like to use it for mooore than commuting tbh, as that's what the car is for, and I walk to my sixth as it's only a coupla miles. I bought the geared ped as I used it to get to the gym/occasionally sixth. Geared so I'd have practise for exactly this predicament

But now, whether to do the test on my own steam or do a course? Hmm.

mod 2 you need training for deffo

mod 1 you could probably try 4 times and it woud be cheaper on your own

lulz 4k in 4 months,are you a weekend rider ?

don't need a big 600 to go fast,i enjoy riding on the 125 more as you have to work it,unlike some people who just flip back the throttle and cant control there bike ;D

Depends how confident you are I think, if you are very confident I'd go for a couple of one-off lessons then do the test, if not then go for the course! test is definitely the best option either way though i think

Okay I'm going to get my test done! I just need a bike to buy for afterwards though.

I can either sell my 50 to pay for my test and have nothing to practise on or sell my 50, buy a 125 to practise on and take some money out of savings for the test, and then sell the 125 and buy a bigger bike.

I'm pretty confident though, but I don't know if the power difference between a 2t 50 and a 4t 125 will throw me off.

I'll probably do a day or two of lessons either way, as I'll have to hire a bike to do the test on unless I buy a 125.

Anyone been in a similar situation?

I'd recommend buying and using a 125 to get you through your test. one 2 or 3 hour lesson on mod 2 should suffice along with being able to practice on your own. the mod 2 isn't the green eyed monster of a test that its made out to be. I rode disgracefully (compared to my usual standard) and got one minor for nearly taking the wrong turn. thats it.

Unless you wanna do DAS in which case you're gonna need a 500.

A 125 4t is alot more powerful than a 50 2t. but not at all difficult to control even for the most dire novices. The feeling of "good god i can actually keep up, and i'm not screwing it!" is a nice one.
