Been out on the bikesafe m'larky today. Headed up to Exeter with mother dearest on the bikes this morning and had mixed feelings about what to expect.

TO cut a very long story short had a great time. Met a good bunch of people and had a laugh to go along with it. Bonus!

Thought the usual stuff about having a copper following me all day but shouldn't have worried.

They basically said that 30,40,50 limits were sacrosanct but it is up to your instructor guy for define how he sees NSL ...and ours wasn't tooo fussed. Were overtaking people in cars on the lanes who were doing 55 so he said just to go with the flow.

Police rider was on a lovely blue R1 that they have for the shows and stuff, great rider and the other guy in the group also on an R1 so me and my MT-03 had to really get a shimmy on! Didn't slow em down in the lanes though.

Really good feedback. Rode about 120miles round lovely twisties in sunshine with two great riders.

Copper was relaxed about it all and I saw a few cheeky wheelies on his behalf thrown in for good measure Laughing

SO yeah if anyone is not sure whether to go I would say for £25 it is worth a punt if you fancy trying it.

The theory was a bit Mad but out on the road was entertaining enough.

Not what I would call top of the list of things for me to do but wanted to see what it was all about and glad it went.

I've been wanting to go for some years but various things got in the way - like not even having a roadworthy bike last summer, and not feeling entirely confident this summer because I'm getting back to it after a break...

I'm promising myself that at the very latest, I want to go thru with it early 2011

So they wouldn't mention a small plate loud exhaust and riding unrestricted if such a person went to it? That was what worried me.

I don't think it's for me.

I can't see the point of being taught how to ride illegally for a couple of hours, exempt from being nicked during that time, yet being left totally wide open to being pulled if you ride like that at any other time.

i think the point is more like ''people on bikes ride fast. may as well teach them to do it properly''

I've replied in 'Bike Safe' threads before that I went along with loud can unbaffled, dark visor and smaller number plate! Was advised not to wear dark visor after dusk, number plate was visible at the legal distance so ok and the guy running ours commented that the exhaust sounded great! Not sure about the restriction thing, but would suggest that if you didn't draw attention to it they may not mention it anyway.

Overall the impresion I had was that they were keen to encourage bike riding folk to be sensible and part of that was being realistic. Dangle things in their faces and be difficult, then they'd be hard pressed to ignore it, be reasonable and polite they were fine. I had a good rideout on my BikeSafe and would thoroughly recommend one. Thumbs Up

This is what im worried about also (minus the small plate)

Scares me to think I'd be followed by a cop riding illegally Shocked

EDIT: Just read your reply Tonka, I think id still have that niggle in the back of my mind though. Maybe I'll wait til my restriction period is over.

Fiarly certain they don't accept learners - 'cos what you'll be taught is contrary to what you need to pass the test, apparently....

I'm in my restriction, and I'll be doing it. Can't see them going over 85-90 (as you're into instaban @ 30 over the limit) even if 70-odd is OK....... and I'm happy my bike'll keep up just fine at those speeds Wink

I am in the 2year restriction period and bike doesn't have a kit in.
Wasn't even asked about it.

Took my license off my before we went out to make a note of the license number etc for forms but that was it.

R1 the police rider had a can on that growled nicely and the other guy out with us had twin Yoshi cans and tinted visor on copper just said he liked the sound.

Don't get me wrong...We wern't 'racing' and him continually turning a blind eye to blatent law breaking.

Just spent the day riding quickly and making progress on the twisties. Only difference is I am obviously not going going as fast as I would without him there and not be pinning it out of the corners etc.

We were equally matched confidence wise more than anything.

Enjoyed it. Was a whole range of people there. Everyone was there to get something different out of the day and seemed everyone found what they wanted from the day at the end of it.

This is what I wrote when I did it a few years ago: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=93546

I don't think your expectations relate to the reality.
