Lubing your bike chain whilst the bike is in gear has been an epic mistake since motorcycle drive chains were first invented. I think I've regularly heard stories from people since childhood of people with lost fingers and bits of fingers because of that.

The simple moral to the story is, don't lube your bike chain with it in gear. Its lazy and dangerous.

I saw this a while back haha silly man!

(haven't clicked the link) But is this the guy that towards the end of the thread said that he had his fingers amputated above the knuckles or something and he will ride again? Almost wasn't too phased by it.

Nutter.

Well yeah mate that's true, but you could lose your balance (bent down on knees?) or anything else, just for the sake of the risk involved I don't see the problem with merely turning the back wheel by hand. But each to their own.

Cheers,
Steve.

Never mind the fingers.....the biggest mistake he made was lubing his chain with WD40. WTF is that about?

You could apply that to anything. You could fall off a high kerb, therefore you should only cross the road at dropped kerbs Rolling Eyes

Doesn't take much to turn the back wheel by hand, and it doesn't take much for the sprocket to take your entire hand off, let alone the ends of your fingers.

Call me paranoid but the keys are no where near the ignition when I'm working on my chain...
Being a musician as well I fancy keeping my fingers! They do come in handy!

Owch.

I've been cleaning my chain in gear for years. I've lost grip and sent a tooth brush through the sprocket and that got chewed up. For some reason, before now, I've never even thought my fingers could go through it too. :S

Wont be doing that anymore...

I dont have a centre stand or a paddock stand so I lube the chain in neutral and roll the bike forward.

Shocking pictures though.

Bike on side stand, jack up from the right hand side towards the rear, back wheel lifts about 10mm, turn by hand.
Easy.

If you've got a shredder, do you bother unplugging it before you remove jammed paper from it?

Errr surely it would make more sense to have a center stand kill switch if that was the case.

Side stand cut off switches are to prevent the dangerous event of riding with your side stand down.

Imo on a scale of risks I take lubing my chain by holding a can of lube 3ft away from a moving rear wheel is a minor one and barely registers on the "shit I almost died" chart.

Yes if you are an incompetent idiot and decide to touch it or apply tools to it you deserve to lose your hand.

You should rehash the title to "Don't clean the chain with bike in gear"....

I've lubed mine in gear for years. Givin that you are spraying from around 6 inch away. Not a chance of fingers getting anywhere near the chain.
But to clean it..... Never even think of having the engine on.

Seconded. Oiling the chain with it running up on the stand is something a 5 year old can do, and unless you're the type that needs to be told "don't put your hand into moving machinery" it isn't a problem.

And as for "what if you lose your balance?", well you'd better stay in bed. Don't want you stabbing yourself in the eye socket with your toothbrush or scalding your face off making the morning coffee, do we?

FFS guys - this is a basic error!

Who oils their chain in gear with the engine running...?

No forget that..

Darwin had a point - natural selection.

Lets not carry these dicks any more!

Lube chains with the engine off and in neutral... If you didn't already think of that,
then do me a favour and stick your lips around the exhaust and take a few deep breaths with the engine running.

Jesus! Really!?
