I was reading some stories of people thinking they failed their test, riding like sh!t, and then getting back to be told they passed, this kinda happened to me, and it got me thinking - this kinda thing must happen alot.
With me, i did 40 - 45 in a 30, (quickly corrected) and ran over the white paint of a mini roundabout, not clipping the white paint, but running right over it. I thought i had failed for sure, but put it out of my head as quickly as it went in there, carried on riding, and told i had passed. Couple of minors for riding too close to a car (don't recall that at all) and not indicating on a big ass roundabout, i was in lane though so it was a minor.

So come on, let's hear your "I should've failed...but" stories.

Moral of the story is not to dwell on mistakes.

I don't think I should have failed, but 9 miles of the 13 mile route were spent about 8 cars in front of the examiner on straight 30mph roads. Laughing!

I had a number of things I thought I was going to fail my test on:

Messed up my emergency stop (pulled clutch in before the brakes, then let everything off and did it again)
I did 30mph in a 60mph zone (sign was covered by a tree in all fairness)
Pulled straight out at a roundabout without even looking
Missed loads of checks when changing lanes and stopping
Forgot to indicate twice when pulling out of junctions

I got 4 minors, and a bit of a telling off for the emergency stop!

I'm sure if I did the test again now I would most likely fail! Picked up lots of bad habits Wink

I got 9 minors, went the wrong way twice and lost the examiner for a while (and sometimes with him several cars and lorrys behind me)

also some roads i didnt fully know the speed limit, but due to traffic between us (mainly because i went the wrong way) he couldnt really tell.

To say i was bloody lucky in an understatement Laughing

Depends on the examiner. In the good old days when I took my test (mid-80s), most would pass you if they thought you could ride safely. You get the odd bastard but most understand that you're nervous and take that into account.

Taking my test, there was a thick unbroken stop line (and a prominent STOP sign) right outside the centre...which I rode through without stopping Shocked That was despite having been warned by others about it. Spent the whole test thinking 'ah well, I've definitely failed'...but passed and the examiner made no mention of the incident.

Two lanes going straight on at a large roundabout, didn't know the area that well and I had this 'make progress' thing going on in my mind. I rode in the right hand lane right to the end of the traffic and cut over a quite aggresively at the end (like I might do in my car), the instructor said he nearly failed me on that as I could have just stayed in my lane and carried straight on so I didn't need to force my way into a line of traffic.

Think he was in a good mood.

Missed a lifesaver turning right into a side street. Shocked Shocked

Thought I'd bolloxed it up so actually relaxed as a 'there's nothing I can do now anyway' attitude washed over me.

Got a few minors in the end but nothing major. Razz

Same here, just got 1 minor for speeding. I was pretty much textbook Mr. Green

The instructor even complimented me for what a pleasant and nice ride out it was. Must of been in a really good mood.

I failed mine twice. By the third time I deserved to pass!

My instructor kept telling me I was going to be on the DSA xmas card list as a staff member if I kept failing.

I got lost on my test and drove the wrong way down a short one way street to try and find the test centre again. This was after the riding round the block parts, he'd then told me to follow a figure of 8 route which was when I ballsed it up.

I believe I was also speeding at one point in my utter panic. I was a week away from being banned for a year if I didn't pass my test, so when I finally sighted the test centre and the examiner standing there with his clip board, I was nearly in tears.

When he said I'd passed I thought I'd misheard him, what with the roaring of the blood pulsing in my ears. He walked off and I ripped my L plates off and hugged a passing old lady, who shook me off angrily.

The ride home was horrible, I was all over the place with the after shock.

Passed with one minor, thought I rode flawlessly.

The examiner said it was for been hesitant while turing right. Rolling Eyes

Although we didn't have mod 1 and mod 2 when i passed.

Didn't have a MOD 2 when I did mine but:

I put my foot down on the U-turn.
I turned left up a steep side road and managed to put it into neutral and almost started rolling backwards towards the examiner.
After the emergency stop (the bike had ABS so was pretty hard to fail...) I was still in 2nd and pulled away chugging along.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I also thought I'd failed my car test as it took me ages to do the reverse round a corner, I had to straighten up about 3 times. (He picked a really dodgy corner.... Laughing )

I passed both first time, 3 minors on the bike, 7 in the car. Cool Wink

I'd expect they are taking in to account how you cope and recover from minor mistakes rather than making every little point black or white pass/fail.

We all have little incidents wile riding - how we react so they don't become serious incidents is the key.

first time on my mod 2 I deserved to fail, well I did fail. It was the worst I had ever ridden a bike, I think mainly was from the lesson I had 2 hours before my test he told me I was cornering to quickly especially in the rain, so when it came to my test I was going around corners so slowly that I was wobbling. Ended up with 9 minors and 1 serious (for going around a parked car when there was oncoming traffic)

Second time around didn't go for a lesson and just relaxed, although I almost didn't make it to the test centre because my front L plate was flapping off so stopped at staples and grabbed some selotape and wrapped it around the L plate to keep it there.

Went straight through the second attempt at it without any minors (well 1 for not doing my lifesaver going into the test centre car park although I'm certain I did Evil or Very Mad ) also half way through the test my head set came unplugged so I couldnt hear anything he was saying, luckily enough he was taking me back to the test centre which was where I was heading

Why?

The government got sick of old blokes riding round for years on old scabby step throughs with L plates and never bothering to do their bike tests.

So they brought out a new two part bike test, lowered the 'any horsepower you can get 250cc' learner bike to 12 horsepower 125cc maximum.

Part 1 was very similar to the CBT but without any training, riding round cones, emergency stop between two cones, slalom, figure of 8 etc,you lost points for touching a cone, forgetting any of the million required lifesavers etc. More than 6 lost points (I think) and you failed. Put a foot down during the figure of 8 or slalom was also a fail.

Part 2 was like Module 2 but without someone following you on another bike and yet another emergency stop.

If you had a motorcycle provisional, the clock started ticking from the date it was issued. If you didn't pass the bike test within 2 years you were banned from riding for a year.

It was like that for me, only they had brought in the 125 cc (12bhp) when I turned 17.

Due to lack of funds and been stuck in a remote place, I had to ride for 2 years, then wait 1 year to get the motorcycle entitlement back on my provisional licence.

Living and working on the farm, I did manage to get my tractor licence done.

Deserved to fail my first test. Did 30mph in a 20mph zone.

But for my second I did everything perfectly and passed without any minors. What the examiner did say to me though is that I didn't know how to follow directions properly. On a number of occasions he told me to take the first exit at two different roundabouts but I ended up taking the second. Confused

Because I did everything correctly (mirrors, indicators, observations etc) he had no option but to pass me Very Happy

My grandpa left it until the last day of his provisional licence to do his test.

He actually dropped his Brough. However, this was 1952. Examiners were suppost to stand at certain set points on a route, and for one reason or another that particular examiner wasn't there to see it Laughing

See I felt a little hard done by when I failed mine - I was in an area I don't know and told to turn right at a box junction with a traffic light with right turn filter light on it. I was waiting for the light for turning right to change, it didn't and I failed for holding up the traffic and hesitation.

I would have passed if it weren't for that Sad
