I went to the train station to catch a train, and got chatting to someone who is also into bikes.

Now maybe this guy was telling the truth, or maybe he was setting out to impress at any costs.

I'm guessing the latter but maybe I'm a suspicious bastard..

He works as a bike mechanic on track bikes and race bikes. If a racer is injured, he will take the bike out in the race and compete as an amateur so the sponsors still have a bike go out with their logos on. He gets better lap times than the owners of race spec bikes who use them for track days (this could be true if they dont do many trackdays). Because he makes loads of money, he also has a mitsubishi evo that has 600bhp. He then showed me pics of what looked like crash thread pics. Nice car looking shiny followed by pics of it in a ditch upside down.

He was interesting to listen to, and I was pleasant and polite, but the whole time I was gently trying to steer the conversation towards trying to catch him out.

I think the most likely howler, was that he has a car, but no car license, and when the police have stopped him, he just shows them the bike license and they never check the back. Except on one occasion, when he had to bribe the copper with £1000 that he always carries on him just in case he wants to buy something. His argument being that points on a DVLA license could affect his race license.

Lewis Hamilton never had a problem with his race license after doing doughnuts or whatever, so I'm thinking this is testable lie.

So can anyone tell me for sure, that if someone has a race license, it wouldnt be affected by points on a dvla license ?

Apparently, he needs the race license for testing and setting up bikes for trackdays. I'm going to forget he mentioned doing work for british superbikes, as he could just be exaggerating that bit, and he may actually do race prep for track bikes. He mentioned going out to Spain to do race prep for bikes for track days and being well paid. I know this sort of thing exists from wave's thread a while back about going out to Spain to do trackdays as a way of being sure of good weather. So at the very least, this guy knows a bit about what he's talking about.

He did tell me the name of the company he claims to run, but I forget it. Something "audit" I think, which sounded a bit unusual based in Leicester.

I dont know enough about race prep stuff to catch him out other than this thing on race license being affected by road points, which seems unlikely to me.

Anyone else been told any tall tales that seemed like lies that turned out to be true, or tall tales that sounded like lies because they were actually lies, but sounded plausible at the time ?

Anyone here want to mention when they found themself turning from exaggeration to made up bullshit to try to make a story sound impressive ?

EDIT : on reflection I think maybe he gave himself away at the start.

His opening line was, is that your DT ? I had arrived on a tt250R, which is a 4 stroke with a hole in the exhaust so couldnt really be mistaken for a 2 stroke.

so he must be faker, surely

no, just wondering if I could know whether it was all lies, or vaguely possible.

I think I've probably answered it though with remembering what he said at the start, thinking a 4 stroke bike was a 2 stroke bike. Bit unlikely for a mechanic.

I think the tall tales thing is still an interesting area though. This guy was spinning more and more stuff over about half an hour.

I think it's an interesting thing when people do that.

Well from my perspective, it would be hard to get into, but I guess if you have the skills, its not.

Yeah I think you are right.

It broke up the journey though nicely, as I had forgotten to bring some headphones to listen to music.

I had similar at the ace before the brighton burnup.

Waiting around with a few mates for two more after the main ride had left, bloke comes up to us after overhearing me say what a tasty 750 some guy going past had.

His opener was something along the lines of "Nah they are rubbish, get yourself a GSXR-1000", so immediately my bullshitdar went off.

Along the lines of what you were saying colin, one of my first replies to him after he finished his monologue was "Wheres your bike? not riding today?", replied with something about being paid 400 quid to be there on roadmaintence crew or something. Then regaled us about his the other week when his Gix-1000 which he wheelied over a bridge, passed a waiting bike cop, and when pulled blagged it and only got away with a ticking off about notchy head bearings....

Also stories of pissing over packs of R1's in france etc and more which i dont remember.

Now he could have been 100% truthfull. But the question remains why are you telling random strangers about it?, oh yeah he currently owns 10 bikes.... Rolling Eyes

I just dont understand the need to either lie like that or push your fucking life story when you werent asked to.

Weirdos...

I've just remembered another one like that.

A year ago, I did a trackday at Anglesey and there was a guy limping about the cafe with a broken foot. It turns out he was an Irish street racer (the irish equivalent of the TT).

Or maybe he was just a guy with a broken foot. Who knows.

I quite like these stories whether they or true or not makes it part of the fun, like a puzzle to figure it out.

Sounds like bullshit to me Col.

As said, spannering (or more likely gofering) for BSB isnt that hard to get into, but i very much doubt it will make you rich.

My ACU licence is in no way connected to my road licence, I know people that ride on the track that do not have a road licence at all. You have in effect been masturbated over Colin, the guy used you to massage his fantasy ego over.
My advice, hot bath and burn your clothes.

Perhaps you are lying about meeting this liar who regaled you with tall stories....

If true, it sounds like an encounter straight out of Pete & Dud, the sort of bloke you'd normally miss your train to avoid. I used to know a bloke who would talk about nothing but his experiences in the Falklands, one day he got caught out, he'd never been near the place, spent the time working in a factory. The word is full of weirdos and fantasists, and some of them aren't even on this forum.

Dave in Finland. Or not, possible a bedsit in Peckham. Hard to tell, isn't it?

50% joke, though I was under the impression that 'train station' was more American, and 'railway station' more British. I suspect there are regional variations in the use within Britain. I have never called a railway station a train station, my background is brought up in Oxford, teen years in Manchester, lived and worked in London after that. 'Station' or 'railway station' are the only terms I remember using, or hearing being used.

*Not taking the piss, I am genuinely interested in the apparent trivia of language usage.

Yeah this guy was very tall. Phoenix off here is about 6ft to 6ft2 I think, and this guy was taller than that. His hair wasnt that light though. He did talk about putting number plates on race bikes and riding them on the road, with just bicycle lights. I asked if he could really get an MOT that way, and he said he is an MOT tester so he does his own. I asked how much it costs to do the course to become an MOT tester, and he said he didnt know as it was paid for him by the company he used to work for.

I notice you live just east of London, and this guy lives in London, so its quite possible it was the same guy. Although his company is based in Leicester, he claims to commute from London.

Funnily enough this has reminded me of when I was at uni, and there was a rather odd bloke who was a bit of an alcy who claimed to have been in the Falklands war, which would sort of command a bit of respect and sympathy. No one was quite sure if it was bullshit, but as we were all naive kindly students we tended to be more sympathetic than suspicious.

The bloke I knew was a real loudmouth, max volume and a 'fuck' every other word. My wife wouldn't let him in the house. He used to show people fuzzy pictures of people on an aircraft carrier and claim one was him, but they could have been anybody. Total fantasist.

This is the kind of definitive proof I needed. Thanks, I can now rest easy that I was right to be a bit unbelieving, and I'm not overly suspicious without good reason.
