So has anyone got a specific type of food they like to do on tours? I recently discovered this one:

Porridge in a bag
Enjoy porridge on the go, simply by adding boiling water

Ingredients:
3 tbls of porridge oats
2 tbls of muesli
1 tbls of powdered milk
1 tbls of sugar

Place all ingredients into a zip tie bag and shake vigorously to mix up.

To cook simply add around half a pint of boiling water, adding more if necessary. Leave to stand for 3-5 minutes (with bag sealed) and then give it a shake before eating out of the bag.

Have an experiment around with adding other stuff and more of less water. I was using double portions as there where two of us and we just added water to above the ingredients. Portion size was probably on the small side but kept me going all the morning when walking.

Will a standard bag take boiling water or do you need something stronger?

For a cooked breakfast, or any time of the day you can do a similar 'in the bag' style meal to make an omelette.

Arrow Chop up any veg you like ie. onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, cooked potato into small pieces (smaller than normal as they cook at the same time).
Arrow Break eggs into plastic container or bag along with veg and shake up to mix.
Arrow Heat a frying pan with butter and tip in mixture, cook and eat! You can do it as a boil in the container, but it's nicer fried up!

If you're only away for an overnighter you can make this at home and carry with you to save time/hassle factor. Alternatively for a short trip I tend to take a pasta sauce (homemade) in a tub and then just boil the dried pasta once in camp and pour sauce over once drained to heat through.

Like Stinkwheel demonstrated campfire cooking has few limitations if you get yourself organised Thumbs Up

I did a trifle in France when challenged to make dessert - our family trifle doesn't have jelly, so leaving that out wasn't a concern! Tinned fruit, trifle sponges, alcohol miniature, creme fraiche and chocolate - all ok to go in panniers! Our evening meal was steak and vegetables with alcoholic trifle pudding! Drooling

I've not actually 'boiled' a plastic bag, but sticking them in boiled water does ok! It's only ok for quick cook stuff where it's more of a heat through.

Cheers, I'll make a note of the porridge idea, can see that one coming in handy.

Yeah they took the boiling water fine, I was careful not to touch the hot pan with the edge of the bag though as I think it will probably melt.

Last time I went camping instead of bringing a bottle of cooking oil, I instead got a small sealable container and filled it with cotton balls then poured a lot of oil into the container. I kept doing this until the cotton balls were completely saturated with oil.

Come cooking time, pull out an oil ball, gently heat it in a pan to soften the oil contained within, then rub the pan with the thing. Surprisingly worked a treat.

Thats a great idea for oil, my trangia frying pan retains an oil film for a bit so can cook without oil usually. I usually eat packet rice, tins of curry/stew etc.
When on the road I tend to find a coffee for breakfast after about an hour of travel then stop for a quick lunch if I find somewhere. Once got my tent up then its time for a good meal with a bottle of wine and a few beers.

I found these sachets of instant coffee in asda. They were pretty nice with sugar and whitener built into them. I don't usually take sugar in my coffee any more, but having that after waking up in the snow on the 1st of January this year was the dogs bollards.

Having 4 or 5 sachets of that stuff meant that I could reduce the milk / sugar I was taking with me. The I picked up some instant white tea and put that in a little container. Tea and coffee in a small size without having to bring sugar and milk. Fantastic.

Like the cotton ball tip... but can't abide touching dry coooton wool!

We usually carry Travellunch packets with us on long trips in case we get caught somewhere without supplies. Last for ages if not used and only take 10 mins max and a mug of boiling water to prepare.

usually we buy the making of a pasta sauce and bags of pasta as we go; pasta and red stuff! The food of champions!

for porridge, id suggest adding raisins Thumbs Up

Cous cous is a great camp food, as it cooks really quickly as its actually pre-cooked and dried, and you just need to rehydrate it and warming it up is recommended but optional.

Also, chorizo, salami etc are dried meat, so if you put them in with the cous cous, they rehydrate too and become soft and add a nice flavour to the cous cous.

I know this is not entirely motorcycle related, but I like to sample what is stereotypically thought of as one of the countries dishes/drinks/traditions.

Eg.

Croissant in Paris whilst up the Eiffel Tower (Oooh such a cliche).
Bratwurst and Becks Beer in Bremen, Germany.
Pizza in Pisa, Italy eating it right under the Leaning Tower.
Guinness in Dublin at the Brewery.
Jerk Chicken and Red Stripe Beer in Jamaica (also a big Fat Joint bought from a local at the Bob Marley Museum).
Joint in Amsterdam.
Couscous in Tunisia

Just to name a few....

This would be seen as cruel and unusual torture according to the Geneva Convention!

It depends on your level of synasthesia!

I can now taste the fecking stuff in my mouth when I touch it with my left hand following nerve damage due to a bad shoulder injury.

It feels horrible! I can't touch it at all now without feeling like I am trying to eat it.

S'true it's very fecking weird... my other half sometimes tries to get me to pick it up to see me wince Very Happy

Sound explanation, sorry to make fun of something that unpleasant. Handling the stuff doesn't sound too threatening, but eating it would be a different matter.

Entire left hand side of my body is fecked as regards sensations... my left foot feels warm when it is cold, I have virtually no reflex respone in my left knee and recently suffered with vestibulitis due to an ear infection.

I collapsed in work and was rushed to hospital and kept in overnight and ended up , finally, with a stroke specialist... he was the first person who listened when I explained that after cartwheeling off my MTB during a descent in the Cheddar 500 race back in 1989, I had so badly torn muscles, nerves and ligaments that I have a noticeable lack of sensation... sent me home... missus threw cotton balls at me as I had been out all night Very Happy

Don't worry guys .... it's not all that bad... just a couple of freaky nerve responses and a slight lack of touch which is a pain trying to do things up in the dark ... just HATE touching cotton wool - and touching Bedford red bricks... ! Okay enough - next subject! Very Happy Very Happy
