I was reading the other post about road positioning etc and thought what about filtering in the rain? Most filtering takes place over white lines so......?

I've always been fine, I just slow it down a bit, the main thing I worried about it something happening quickly and locking the brakes.

Genius

I'd go with what Chris said, just ride a bit slower and more sensibly, leaving more time to react etc. Thumbs Up

+1
White lines and manhole covers are a problem, but not so much if your going at a steady pace in a straight line, without hard braking, accelerating, turning.

More of a problem I find when filtering is the join you get in the middle of the road and the bike tries to follow it. Especially if I've only got an inch or two either side of the gap. For rain on white lines I just go that little bit slower.

I have just taken it slower too. My normally slow pace becomes a crawl (still faster than the cars and I move out the way if any other biker comes up behind me itching to get past).

Never really thought about it. Just by the fact it's wet I'd have already adjusted my riding style to be safe and then I filter pretty much the same as I would normally.

When you're filtering you should already be going slowly enough that a white line isn't going to cause you any problems at all anyway. A wet line only normally become dangerous under decent acceleration or cornering. I'd say relax, stay alert and you'll be fine!

I find visibility more of a problem in the rain. Visor down and you can't see properly and have to keep wiping every few seconds with your gloved left hand. Visor up and you have to squint to avoid as much water getting in your eyes as possible.

I've had that a couple of times too and it's really annoying, that and islands but they don't change with the weather Laughing

And little Puppy Dog's tails.....

Cnuts in cars/vans are worse than the s4it on the road surface.
But Cat's Eyes are not the most comfortable bits to ride over repeatedly unless you are of a certain persuasion. (You know who you are.)

I filter just as fast as normal in the rain, my trip to college last year was pretty much a constant traffic jam the whole way so I'd be in and out of cars with heavy acceleration and braking to make maximum progress. None of this seemed to be a problem, I guess because you're mainly upright, I used to have fun giving it some as I came out of the line of traffic to try and get the rear to spin up on the lines / cat's eyes. You rarely get much spin though (admittedly it was only a CB5) which teaches you just how far you can push before anything bad happens!

As said above the worst bit would be if you had to brake in a hurry because for every other situation your survival instinct is keeping you at a reasonable speed where it thinks you can stop even on a wet white line, but if you're going along and think 'what if that car pulled out now' you often realise you're going a bit fast...

These are my experiences anyway.

i slow a bit in the rain but still filter

and watch out for manhole covers as the tend to put them in stupid places

end of the lane our village is on there's one right were you need to stop to turn across oncoming traffic cant stop before as you would turn on the wrong side of the road or after as you would be on the footpath Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

its annoyed me for years

My concerns are own visibility thru a rain splattered visor, and that drivers also likely to have similarly restricted visibility thru the side and rear of the car, and via their mirrors.

Other than that, just travel a little slower, and be much more cautious than normal.

You should learn the power of rain-x. Clean your visor with hot soapy water and dry it with bounty kitchen roll until it squeaks, then apply rain-x and rub it in well, then apply it again and buff lightly until the visor clears.

Cats eyes in rain are a bit worrying, as are white lines obviously.

Spread your braking a bit more (more back than normal) and try to lessen the likelihood of needing to hammer the brakes by revving the tits off your bike so everybody knows your coming and gets the fuck out of your way Thumbs Up

Agree, they seem to put manhole covers in just the right place to make them dangerous. In the middle of Tewkesbury there's a mini-roundabout with a war memorial in the middle. It's got a big smooth manhole cover right where you ride. Go to the left and you confuse the cars waiting to join to your left, and have to make a really tight right hand turn to recover, go to the left and your hit the war memorial. I always avoid going that way if its raining as I had a bit of a moment there a few weeks ago.
