Go out with the sole intention of purposely trying to pull wheelies. I'm not great at them, i've done lots of 'accidental' ones where its been relatively quick riding and the fronts came up... so my thinking was to try and get them done a bit better.
I managed 5 in the end, 2 went well, 2 were quick and basic and 1 landed slightly crossed but ended ok.
So far they've just been off the power, I've been going to 40mph in 1st gear then accelerating quickly, not giving it immediate 100% throttle but getting close to, and its coming up then going back down as the revs start to close out.
All in all, the bike seems to be staying in a straight line, the slightly crossed up landing was avoided a little gearing up and keeping 100% power on which kept the front a little lighter and let it sort itself out.
They've so far been easier than I though (i've generally avoided doing them on purpose), mainly due to a fear of landing the front wrong and smashing the bike to pieces.
Any tips on doing more of these safely, it's something i want to crack, not to do them all the time, but just something I'd like to be able to do with a reasonable level of confidence. ____________________ Current Bikes: Honda CBR 600RR - '07, Suzuki GSX1250 FA ST '11

I always found clutch wheelies off the line to be easiest. That's probably as i was going slowest and knew falling off would hurt the least. I don't think i've even owned a bike that will wheelie just off the throttle. Thats probably going to be a shock when i get on one for the first time and pin it |

+1, I learnt off clutching it up, not brilliant but does feel A lot more skillful It's easier than you think aswell, and the bike seems to come up A lot more controllably. ____________________ Journalist, student, egotist.

Cheers for the replies. The power wheelies are bad for that as it'll generally be getting towards/over 70mph when im coming to land it, and they dont last long.
I'll give the clutch a go. I was thinking of starting low (I mean real low, say 5k) at 20/30mph, then increase by 500/1000rpm and dump the clutch? Anything else I should be aware of, other than getting ready to fall off and create a 'today i did bash bike trying to wheelie' thread ____________________ Current Bikes: Honda CBR 600RR - '07, Suzuki GSX1250 FA ST '11

15-20mph more like mate, it's a lot easier I think at that speed to just get used to the 'jerk' but other than that yes start at around 5k. My CBR6F comes up at around 9k, it does seem to depend what mood the bikes in though Sometimes it just bogs down no matter what revs you give it.
You WILL throttle off the first couple times and will think the wheel is coming up a lot quicker than it is, this is natural and you get used to it. I am by no means the greatest wheelyer either, so am looking forward to watching your progression mate ____________________ Journalist, student, egotist.

Can't wait to get back on the road and learn to wheelie!
Many hours of youtube tutorials have given me a basic understanding of how to wheelie in different ways, i'd advise trawling through yuotube for a bit. ____________________ Yamaha YBR125 (2010) - BROKE! |

I can clutch up at a basic level, for a few seconds.... id like to push it further just a bit nervous to etc. Have done a few high ones, but that's when i went out only to do wheelies (oh, and accidently did it in first too )
I have landed crossed too, but it does just sort its self out.
Have fun, remember that rear brake as well.. i always forget about it |
