burnt out/ dumped bikes rusting away

has anyone ever scrounged parts from burnt out/rust bucket bikes before?
i only ask because there are a couple round my area, they've been reported to the police several times, but they don't seem interested in them because its a semi rural area

a cb125 was left for about 8 years ( when i first moved here) before it finally got taken away a month ago ( by the parks people)when they put up a new fence,

these bike are basically carcasses, several have been slowly rusting away for 5-6 years and the undergrowth has starting to swallow them up , but i've noticed a couple of salvageable parts on them (Aluminium items with a decent amount of oxidization, but nothing some tlc wont fix) calipers, brake master cylinders, hubs, a mag or two
would i be a complete idiot in taking them before mother nature reclaims them?

on one hand i think there going to waste and with a bit of tlc are perfectly usable parts
but then my brain kicks in and i think that was someone's pride and joy and im no better that the thieving bastard who stole it


what are you opinions on this please ?

if theres no reg, frame or engine numbers id say fair game, as theres no chance of it being returned to an owner.

If theres a frame or reg, its still someones bike

I took the termi end cans of a laverda 750 that had been dumped in the fields near my folks.
Police had been called numerous times over 3 months but nobody came so I claimed them!

And lo and behold the police will turn up just as you take a bit and charge you with theft by finding ... hopefully not, but I wouldn't put it past them!!

I think after several years, its fair game. After 3 months, would be too soon.

Although strictly speaking, you should probably report the bikes to the police for them to have some money grabbing company collect them on the off chance that the original owner wants them back.

I used to work in the Parks Dept many moons ago and we were the people who used to collect dumped and abandoned bikes and cars.
once they had been collected, they would sit in the yard for ages, before being destroyed.
I saved many bits from bikes before they were destroyed and built an FS1E and two A100`s just from scraps

All of my moto-ball bikes were kept going from dumped/hedgerow bikes

We used to have a rule of thumb that said if they had sat in our yard for a year, chances were that the owner was`nt interested.
we would inform the police many times but they were just not interested and 99.999% not even come out to see what we had collected.

This was a good few years ago so things may be different now.

take the whole bikes salvage what you can and ebay it then weigh the rest in might pay for a good drink
