My son will be turning 16 in a few months time and I thought about getting him some wheels and an engine.
What are the kids riding these days?
I don't want to spend too much, just in case it gets nicked or bashed. I would like him to have a geared bike, but he is a short arse so will probably be best on a twist and go thing. Needs to look rugged ish ( that's so I wont feel the shame of having near the house) Not too chavvy either.
by the way, he isn't really into bikes, it is me wanting him to get some independence and some road skills before he gets into a car when he is 17yr.

Buying anything too pretty is likely to get robbed or more likely dropped wiping a load off the value and breaking his heart. 50cc dirt bike on the other hand can be dropped, kicked, pushed over, vandalised and still work and look decent.

Sachs Madass.

So minimal, there is nothing there to break. C50 derived motor so almost bomb proof. Proper big wheels, proper footpegs, lightweight and the controls are in the right places.

Could be something of a theif magnet though.

Quite fancy one myself actually.

I'm gonna have to +1 this.

A guy I used to be in a band with had one of those, and it was quite a snazzy bit o' kit. Aye granted it was a bit slow, but t'was a 50 so was bound to be!

IIRC it's also 4 stroke, so none of this faffing about with rebuilds etc that you'd probably be faced with if you bought an inexpensive old Apriliarse.

EDIT: Can't see a gear lever on the above photo so I don't know if there were different options with these bikes when bought brand new or what? As the guy I knew, had a 4 speed gearbox on his.
Cheers,
Steve.

Not sure what they do ride, but you can always try a Rieju. Spanish brand, prices are mid way between Chinese and Jap bikes. They have proper Yamaha engines in, not cheap Chinese made replicas. Have a nosey. Got a few 50cc's

Brother in law had a gilera dna50. Cracking wee scoot, cheap as chips second hand, good height for shorter people too

Almost like a bridge between a scoot and a geared bike, they actually don't look too bad in the flesh

Just got the wreck of an MT50 for a project. Definitely quite a bit smaller than the modern-fare 50cc dirt bikes I think and from what I remember they go ok etc.

I've got the same with No1 Son who is 16 shortly. I accept the fact that the bike will be dropped and generally abused so there's no way was I going to spend out a fortune on a nice bike. Went Chinese and bought a BT49QT for £125.

https://i997.photobucket.com/albums/af99/stuartadair123/stufff/IMG00194-20100816-2151.jpg

Now he's got an incentive to behave and I've told him that if he's in one piece when he's 17 he can use my other Chinese bike.

Best bike I ever had, don't get him a dirtbike, it will probably end up being abused in a field by pikeys.

What's your price range?
