I wouldnt mind one once I pass my test and my goal is to end up with an RG500 or an NSR400 at some point.
I've been looking at these RGV250's and I've heard good things about them. And the Aprilia RS250's.
Thing is, Restricting them down really does take the two-stroke fun out of them, So does this mean I'm stuck to either a 125 stinkwheels or a 4 stroke alternative?
I just love the all or nothing nature of two-strokes and the only thing that bothers me with them is their lack of holding any speed when faced with any kind of revs below 7000rpm.
are there ANY decent two-stroke racers out there that are on or JUST over the 33bhp limit BAR the RS125 and Cagiva mito (Both are FAAAAR too unreliable from what I've heard) |
If you think a Mito or an RS125 is unreliable... I'd seriously avoid an RGV250 or RS250. They both have the same engine and they like to eat themselves when the powervalves wear out.
A nice late model Mito will be under the power limit (and more crucially the power to weight ratio limit) and will be pretty reliable If looked after
Now, I'm certain that if a 17 year old can look after an RS125 well enough to ride it as a daily, then it is reliable enough for what you want. An RS250, RGV250, KR1S, a newer TZR250, NSR250, NS400, RG500, RD500 etc will all be fantastically expensive to run and probably extremely unreliable and/or expensive to buy.
My suggestion would be a 1KT 2MA TZR250, they are getting on a bit now but they are solid bikes and they handle well. They will be shit restricted to 33bhp though, which is why I'd buy a Mito or 5-10 year old RS125 if I were you. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |

I rode a new ish RS125 last night. The guy told me it was 33bhp and i could have a go if i want. Well, i've never ridden a 33bhp 125 so i did. I was very careful to warm it up and didnt take it above 6K till 3 bars were showing on the dash. When i did i was dissapointed, there is no way that bike was 33bhp. There was no zing at the top end, just the promise when it hit 7K and sort of flattened. I'm sure it was 15BHP, it wouldnt pull much more than 75mph. I told him what i thought when i got back and he still insisted it was 33bhp. Not a chance.
The brakes were awesome tho, one finger was the safest way to use them and the handling was pin sharpe, like you are holding the front wheel spindle, confidence inspiring.
As someone said earlier, i would plan the maintenance in advance and use top quality oil, always warm the engine before you ride it, you dont want cold siezure now do you? ____________________ M.O.B. Successfully taking the piss since 2014. |

Mine is restricted and will go faster than that, well if you could find somewhere legal to do it of course, but I know it is close to 90mph on the clock, not that I would know of course |

Trying to remember what it was now, but lad at work few years had one of these things.
Pretty sure it was Spanish, though may have been french, had a Yamaha DT engine it it, and a very neat steel trellis frame, with minimal body-work, though definitely a race replica.
Supposed to make about 26bhp, de-restricted, with LOADS of reliability & the spared back up for one of the longest running 2T motors out there.
Supposed to be as sweet handling as a Mito or RS, but with a low more 'rawness' to it from the minimalist lay-out of the bike.
Was quite taken with it when I had a look over it, but CANT for the life of me remember what it was bludy called.....
If any-one can fill in the blanks, might be worth a look.. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

After reading this thread I'm contemplating getting my interwebs cancelled. Never before has so much retardation been contained in one forum thread.
