I've posted this in the new bikers section but as its me that will be doing the maintenance i thought i'd post it here too, you see my eldest daughter now wants a moped to get to college with. She (well, actually me lol) will be on a budget so it will be a second hand machine...might stretch to £500 if need be.

I'm a pretty confident DIY engineer and i'll be taking care of maintenance etc which is no problem so i'm looking for something that primarily would be reliable, but the spares would be reasonably priced and easy to get hold of.

I realise anything second hand is likely to have had the balls ragged off it so what engines/gearboxes/drive units seem to be the most indestructible?

In short, what make/models would anyone suggest to have a look at?

I should add she's only 5`4" tall so it would need to be easily handled too!

simple to be honest. Nothing Chinese, everything else is good. for smaller people i find the Piaggio typhoon a good choice it is produced in both 50 and 125 cc versions (unsure of your daughters age)

Im in a controversial mood tonight.............
chinese scoots can be had for pennies, & if you get a half decent one (there all the same underneath & spares are plentiful, so go for an unabused, low milage one) & treat it as disposable, then they can well worth the money.
for example, pay £250 & if it lasts a year then its only cost a fiver a week.
cover everything in acf50, replace a lot of bolts/fixings & maintain it properly & theres no reason it wont last a year or 2, if you keep it indoors.
i just "gave away" a chinese 50cc scoot that had been abandoned, replaced the rear tyre (30 quid), stuck a 70cc top end kit on it (35 quid) & pretty much took it apart & re-assembled it.
girl that now owns it is doing 40miles a day & has done nearly 3000miles trouble free.
not bad for chinese crap, eh?
personally rather have a pug or any 2t scoot, but hey ho.
cheers,
GAZ

One of these: https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/honda-sh50-sh-50-city-express-great-runner-tax-mot-/180566674238?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item2a0a9ccb3e
Not mine and nothing to do with me but I do have 3 of these' 1st one £16 on ebay, sized, rusty, bits missing. For spares. 2nd one £73 on ebay, cleaned carb, put through mot (pass) been riding it for a year. 3rd one £83 on ebay, runs fine, needs a spoke for mot. Plenty of spares avalable, big wheels (more comfortable) does exactly what a ped should (got 33 MPH!). Got them for when my girls turn 16. The only problem that I have had with both of them is where they had been standing for a long time, about a year, the oil had got past the pump and filled up the crank case. Just spun it over with the plug out to clear it and all was good. Probably not the most attractive bike out there but does what it says on the tin and Honda reliability. Shit, I might even bid myself.......
Hope this helps.
Stalk.
