RX8, Focus RS, or 350Z.

Got an RX8 at the moment, sorely tempted by a 350Z, or Mark I Focus RS. Dynamically I don't expect the Focus to be as good, and it's "just" a hot hatch.

RX8 handles well, but is slightly underpowered and not great on fuel.

What are 350Zs like? Got done by one on the bypass a few nights ago, along it wasn't a complete walk over. The engine should be far stronger, but I have no idea what the other costs would be like on it, and how good it is day to day?

Anyone have either a Mark I Focus RS, or a 350Z that can guide me?

Or any other cars I should consider?

E46 M3s and S2000s are unatainable due to insurance. RS is similar money to the RX8, and the 350Z is a touch more.

My vote would be for the focus. I've never really got the 350z, they're nice cars and all that but they just dont appeal to me.

Nah... I had a new shape mr2 a few yrs back, that was a hairdressers car...

The Nissan 350z has some Oomph and is a looker, not as much as the GTR like.

What about the VX220 Big Ham, they were on my wish list too a few yrs ago.

Yeah I'd go for the 350z, really nice looking cars.

What about a Honda S2000?

Laughing

It's funny that I can get insured on a 350Z for reasonable money despite it being more powerful and a higher insurance group than the Honda, but there you are.

I thought many of you would say the 350Z.

I think the RS is more of a boys car, whereas the Z is more of a man's car. Thinking

@ Hazy, it's a Galant! AND an auto. Sick

+1 for the MPS! So much torque steer its fun Very Happy

I had an 07 plate with the aero kit as a demo for a week. Cracking little hatchback. I would says this is similar to the RS, more of a boy racers car.

Turbocharged fun or a grunting V6? I would go for the 350z. Like you said its more of a mans car Cool

S2000 pisses over all of them, try harder to get insured on it.

FRS is getting on a bit now, rust is starting to come through and parts need replacing. Still carry a good road presence.

350Z I'd choose, not brilliant on fuel but a classy type car with good performance.

Focus RS hold their value due to the scarcity. I've driven quite a few sporty Focus models but never that one unfortunately. I do remember Clarkson's review where he said they tried to follow every camber change or ridge in the road, dragging you into a hedge! Laughing

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned the downside to the 350Z - two seats only. I was tempted by one a couple of years ago and it was ultimate the lack of space which put me off (massive bar across the boot too). Grunty V6 with rear wheel drive in a small car's gotta be fun though. If you do get one, make sure it has the GT Pack.

S2000? Nah. My mate's wife owns one... and she is a hairdresser! Laughing

not sure i quite agree with that one.

when i was looking for a sports car i test drove a few (rx8, tt, boxster, 350z, s2k..) and although i had a CTR at the time and loved the VTEC revvyness the S2k just wasnt for me.

the old style no power no power no power ZOMG!! nature of the engine would have wound me up eventually. the newer i-VTECs were far superior engines.

i would have bought one tho simply due to the fact my local honda dealer were absolutely superb and it would have been nice to stay with em but insurance was just insane.

the S2k would have cost me over twice as much as the zed or even the 3.2 boxster would have. the newer ones are fine due to TC but the older non-TC versions were jsut backwards into a hedge cars and my insurer said they'd had so many claims on them they cant be competitive any more. was the story for most others too.

in the end i test drove the 350Z and put the deposit down that day! Very Happy

the big lazy engine, handling, looks all sold me.. the power came in big lumps and it felt great! plus power oversteer was great fun, so manageable.

https://farm5.static.flickr.com/4127/5038157669_13f5263b86_o.jpg

i had the zed for 3 years (had a azure blue roadster gt - 300bhp rev-up) and it was a great car, however, a couple of years ago i decided to get a bike licence and its been an expensive driveway ornament ever since Sad

i got rid of it a couple of weeks ago. would have loved to have kept it but id lost money on it and at £400+ tax a year (never did i think id see the day when my tax was virtually the same price as my insurance) it just wasnt worth keeping. 21mpg on the commute was terrible as well.

did give me a lot of fun when i did drive it tho, truely a superb car.

if i hadnt got the bike id be riding around in a 370Z now but all i want now is a nice simple powerful hatchback with a towbar for my trackbike. dont need anything particular sporty as i get my speed thrills from the bikes Smile

Drive it and keep it in vtec though and it's pretty untouchable, it goes that bit further than the ctr. Imo of course.

I remember having the top down in mine, screaming round country roads at 9k rpm, lsd just about keeping you on the road. Insane, closest thing to a bike I've driven.

I miss it, can you tell Laughing

When I first got mine, one of my mates joked saying it was a hair dressers car... took him out in it and he soon changed his mind Rolling Eyes

Fuck, it was expensive though.

Have you considered an Elise ?

The S2's are reasonably practical and better built than the older S1's. Earlier S2's come with the rover K series engine a bit prone to head gasket failure, newer ones with a Toyota lump.

Saying that, I had 2 1.8 K series engines (MGF and an Elise S2), and didn't have any problems with either of them.

Superb handling, and at this time of year go for a bit less money.
