I take a mountain of painkillers for the pain in my knees/thighs from the bilateral nails, as I take double the recommended dosage of codeine plus the mountain of others, the codeine has stopped working as I seem to have built up a tolerance.

I let the GP know that codeine seems to have no effect on me as I'm taking 150mg or so every four hours, the Doctor then brilliantly deduces to give me 224 codeine tablets to help with my pain, at a dose of 60mg every four hours.

Anyone else feel that Doctors just don't listen? I am currently studying Medicine and I hope I never turn out to be a Doctor that doesn't listen to the patients. Anyone else felt this way?

Cheers GP, stellar job as always. Thumbs Up!

Codeine is horrendously addictive. Try to jack it, pain is just pain you get used to it.

My grandfather has been going to the GP for for years complaining with problems peeing. For 4 years he has asked to be checked for prostate cancer. This was ignored untill last month, when checked it turns out he has advanced prostate cancer and secondarys on his kidneys.

Not curable.

I get ankle problems, it gets really painful and seizes up. Some days I limp like a good'un. The Dr says it's just one of those things. *Shrugs*

I haven't bothered to tell him that spine feels like it's on fire some days. What's the point?

My dad went to the doctors every week for 9 months regarding his sleeping / narcoleptic problems. 'Its stress stress stress' we were told. 'But he is the most relaxed guy we know and he is getting worse!' we said. After 9 months he fell down hard. Totally un wake able. Got him to hospital, had some scans done, found out he had a brain tumour the size of a tennis ball. Died that night.

Took 4 years of going to the doctors regarding agonizing Irritable bowel syndrome. Never got better, never changed with change of diet, never seemed effected by anything. Had a colonoscopy done when after being told for the hundredth time I had IBS I fell over in pain out side the GP. The woman on the front desk gave epic 'good god its 5pm, time to go home does this man have no consideration?' sigh. Turns out I have a nasty case of bowel disease. Micro colitis. The same thing my mum has and I have mentioned that every time I spoke to the doctors across them 4 years. It took collapsing in agony 'at home time' before I got the colonoscopy.

I am aware not all doctors are bad. I know a couple of doctors in central London I would consider heroic types.

The ones in Hillingdon and Hillingdon hospital though. Bunch of w***ers the lot of them.

I have to take the missus down to the doctors to demand some help with a back problem that has nearly debilitated her for 5 months next week.

I don't believe in telling doctors what your problems are. I don't believe in demanding anti biotics for everything (cause really, they ain't going work for everything!). But with the deaf doctors, I do believe you have to be as 'demanding for help' as humanly possible. Don't let them fob you off.

This. I get horrendous kidney pain a few times a month (unable to suggest why, have had multiple scans/diagnoses by various doctors all came up empty). I used to chew through paracetamol, they stopped working, moved to co-codamol, stopped working, moved to prescription doses of codeine.. The only thing I'd suggest is don't take them... They do get addictive. My mum suffers with a variety of things and takes tonnes of tablets, some of them being tramadol. I've taken those and they work a treat, albeit they do make me pretty dosile and happy to be around.

Complain to the GMC about it? If you don't they'll just keep on doing bad things. Arches Andy complained about his doctor after misdiagnosis of high blood pressure. IIRC the doctor got a slap on the wrist but enough slaps = bigger slaps and maybe a suspension of their licence.

My sister has just been messed about with by a solicitor a job which should have taken 2 weeks, he dragged his heels and took 5 months and constantly sent unecessary letters etc. She complained to the law society, he does it again or other people complain he loses his right to practice!

It's taken me almost 3 months to get my quack to refer me to the muscoskeletal people after he refused to refer me BACK to my spinal consultant.

I became dependant on tramadol (after taking it 4 times daily for almost 18 month) and every time i went, they just gave me shit loads more and told me to come back if i had any other problems, WTF!

Now i don't take ANY at all and just cry like a little girl Laughing

My back is getting to the point where i am in discussions with my employer about moving to the office as it's affecting my work (or my work is affecting my back), they are more than happy to give me the position that i have requested but they need a letter from my doctor saying that i am 'unable' to perform my current job (apparently this gets round all the official job vacancy malarky), that could be fun trying to get my doctor to write a letter.

step 1) request copy of medical files
step 2) write letter yourself based on medical files
step 3) hand letter in to GP surgery asking Dr to sign it (this is free)
step 4) hand letter to employers

Jobs a good'un!

I keep meaning to get a copy of my notes, just out of curiousity (always been interested in doctory stuff!) but as i have 2-3 folders worth, it would take them ages to copy them all and i'd feel a little bad Laughing

But am i actually allowed to write a letter myself and get my GP to sign it?

I do want to jack codeine in, however even with the other medication walking is rather painful, even with a cane.

I think I may go to the Doctors again and just say I want something different and just not take no for an answer, if you're interested, I am on:

40mg Amitriptyline
200mg Diclofenac
6g of Paracetamol

is my daily dosage of the other medication I take.

bugger that lot
smoke a couple of joints, all those chemicals are not good for you
and the dosage your taking is dangerous never mind upping it
Paracetamol at that dosage per day isn't doing your body any good

i went tot he doctors complaining of lower stomach pains it was all the symptoms of a hernia with out the lump. doctor sent me for a scan not knowing what it was. 12 weeks later and the night before the scan the lump appeared and was very obvious to see. went to the scan and they said they could not see anything wrong or find anything wrong even though i pointed out the lump. not happy i went back to the doctors and saw a different GP. explained the circumstances and symptons. this gp without looking said, u have a hernia. he looked at it and did some checks and confirmed again i had a hernia. he then said "i realy wish doctors would listen to their patients" 8 weeks later i was operated on and now resting for recovery.

That's poor, prostrate is so common!

I'd understand if it was cancer of the pancreas - VERY hard to diagnose.

It is seemingly the price of the drugs age.

Rather than look for an issue, they'd rather listen to a patient, hear selective words like;

"Pain"
"Cough"
"Sick"

these then let alarm bells ring, rather than listening to what the patient has to say about themselves and their issues it's much quicker (and cheaper!) to fob them off with a pocketful of pills again and again. Symptomatic treatment, the problem is you.

I have nothing but praise and respect for my doctor. He has known me for half of my life and has patched me back together more times than I can remember but has never told me to keep off bikes. He did tell me to jack the fags and get my nuts cut and this was sound advice
that I followed.
When he told me of the damage to the hip he talked it through and told me all the options and we came to a mutual conclusion that we do nothing as long as I can take the pain.
I told him that pain is just the weakness coming out of your body.

In your case, I think the pain is a handy reminder to be kind to your hip join. If you were drugged up, you wouldnt feel when when you were over-working it. That crab walk probably puts less stress on it if it gives you less pain, so it will last longer.

Welcome to 'your NHS'!

Take your ticket, wait in line and strive to be the cure to the problem when you're out of uni.

In the mean time, either take the tablets or don't - no-one is forcing you. With the type and severity of pain you've got what did you expect other than opiates? And lets be honest, with most of them you will develop tolerance so you either up the dose or just grin and bear it...

Sorry if I sound harsh, but you're still in pain so they prescribed you a stronger painkiller - what have they done that is particularly wrong in this situation?

Maybe he wanted to be put on a non-opiate pain killer. If so he probably should have specifically asked.
