A friend of mine who had his DRZ400 stolen last month is on the look out for something else.
He wants to go more sports like and he’s considering the following options.

2005 - GS500 : - The cheap option, poor build quality but inexpensive to run
2008 -ZX250R – Fairly quick commuting tool, more expensive but it’s a good machine.
2000 – Thundercat – As you know, a good bike and wont break the bank
2000- CBR600F – The old faithful Honda

In brief i think he wants to spend up to £2000 on a bike, not get insanely stung on insurance but have something that can eat road at 100bhp.
Whenever asked about this i always have a mind blank, but what machines could he also look into getting??
I’ve mentioned so far.
Duke SS (Doesn’t like it, he doesn’t want anything as rare as this really)
SV650 (Didn’t like that either)
TRX850 (Think it looks dated)
Hornet (not so keen on it)

Ideas welcome Thumbs Up

He should be able to pick up any of the inline 4 sports 600's from 98-02 for around that much i reckon. Try not to plug mine too much but insurance is cheap, its been uber reliable, plenty quick for the road. Takes daily abuse/commute well, wont set your world on fire but is just a competent bike for everyday use.

What about an older zx6r or gsxr 600/750.
Can be picked up way below his budget and for older machines-mid 90's era, insurance is very reasonable.

if he is looking to spend £2000 or so, you can pick up a very decent yamaha fazer for that. great bikes, got a lot of grunt, fantastic build quality and cheap on insurance.

if it was more sporty then i would say r6, but they rape you on insurance.

also the hornet is a good idea too.

I'd get a CBR (I did in fact get a CBR) at that money.

Should be able to get a decent 99/00 600f or even a 2001 fuel injected version (it is winter soon afterall) for that price.

I think really he’s after something semi touring. Like the CBRF etc. Not dedicated sports.

Well I only ripped myself off mate as I'd advertised it for £2k, as I really needed the cash quickly.

It wasn't immaculate by any stretch of the imagination. Had a flat rear tyre, no tax and needed a healthy dose of TLC. The calipers were knackered and in need of a serious clean up, possibly replacing. And it had about 6 months worth of crud on it that would of taken a fair bit of elbow grease to shift. I just ran out of time to get anything done on it and it had to go. However it was still a lot of bike for the money, and whoever bought it got a serious bargain once it's all cleaned up. The plastics etc, although dirty, were in excellent condition.

Was a sad moment though, I'd owned it since new and I adored it.

C'est la vie I guess.

How about the ZZR 600? i had a 1992 model a couple years ago, although the handling was not as good as my CBR i actually preferred the engine, just felt a lot more interesting. Only downside was finish isn't as good and there was little storage under the seat. Other than that i feel they are pretty underrated and often overlooked.

What about what i just bought?

I stumbled across the bmw r1100s and what a find.

Fully comp was £188 @ 22

Cost me a shave under £2k.

100bhp and nuts torque, engine breaking is immense and revving so it pulls to one side is funny.

Add decent handling quirky but cool looks bmw build quality and lots of nice touches - its a gem of a /different/ bike.
