 |
|
Hi
Last nite after the ridehome from work i noticed that after a heavy / hard brake application on the front brake that it was binding on the right hand disk ( bike has dual disk kit fitted ). The only reason i know this was the bike was hard to push and the RH side disk was alot hotter than the other.. Would i need to just strip down the caliper and clean up and lube around the piston?? the pads are not new done around 1000 - 1200 miles on them should i replace the pads as well ??? Any help or answers would be great , i have read the brake sorting guides but i want to know what is casuing the binding so it doesnt do it again .
Many thanks in advance.. ____________________ 1st bike - chunlan starway 50QF4 (SOLD) 2nd bike - 92 Honda mtx125RW-L ( In my garage awaiting some TLC)

Hi
Main cause of this would be the caliper sticking. Think the Hyosung has 2 piston sliding calipers, so with these one issue can be that the caliper sticks on its carrier. Take the caliper off the fork and check it slides on the carrier. If not then slide it off the carrier (might be a pain to do if is has stuck) and clean up the pins on the carrier and lube them.
If it slides OK then it might be the pistons sticking. For this you need to carefully pump the pistons out, remove the seals and clean up behind them and clean the piston up (don't scratch the pistons). Lube the seals with brake fluid and reassemble and bleed the brakes.
All the best

Keith,
Thank you for the reply. What would you recommend for cleaning the pistons with???? And should i also look at replacing the pads while i am doing this ??? ____________________ 1st bike - chunlan starway 50QF4 (SOLD) 2nd bike - 92 Honda mtx125RW-L ( In my garage awaiting some TLC)

Hi
Pistons should clean up fairly easily if there is just a build up of rubbish on them. Load of water and a finger nail might well do it, possibly a nail brush and soapy water (but make sure they are very dry after cleaning them). If they are corroded and pitted then you should replace them although you might be able to clean up the pits with fine wet and dry paper if they are very minor (but that will also take off and corrosion protection).
Pads will likely be OK. Possibly roughen the surface of them with a few strokes from some course wet and dry paper.
All the best

Mine was/is similar. My left calliper has a piston that's sticking out like an excited virgin. I took the calliper off (still connected to the brake line) and placed a screwdriver between the pistons on the "bad" side to have them all on that side push out when I pumped the brake.
I cleaned all the crap off them with Wurst Brake Cleaner and a toothbrush, pushed them back once dry and repeated this a few times. Then did the same (for good measure) on the other side. This unstuck the piston and it moved freely... for a time.
It's amazing the amount of sh*t that collects overtime!!
It's playing up again now though and although the same process should work again, I want to fix it and I've been advised to spend the time and strip the calliper down, remove, clean and replace the pistons and put in new seals with lube - as a long term/perma fix.
At the minute though, I'm just freeing it so I can ride without causing too many problems. I'm going to strip them down and clean them when I have the money lying at my side to buy new callipers in case I kill them... knowing my luck!! LOL. ____________________ Jonny (Riding his Kawasaki ZX6R J1)
