Network Unlock iPhone 3G

Hi,

I want to give my dad an old iPhone 3g that is no longer in use or under contract but want to give it to him unlocked so he can put his t-mobile chip in it.

It's currently locked to o2, normally they unlock them when their out of contract but because i no longer have a contract with them they wont unlock it.

Does anybody know of an easy, preferably free way i can unlock the phone so it can be used on any network?

I'm not sure of the exact release but it's the last version before 4.0, i can find out exactly when i get home but i know i didn't upgrade it to 4.0 before it went to live in the drawer.

Don't want to sound like a complete tool (maybe too late) but will jailbreaking the phone allow it to work on any network?

No, you need to jailbreak it which will then allow you to unlock it. Not done any unlocking myself but ultrasn0w should do it.

I decided to do a reset on the phone yesterday and it turned out my brother had already jailbroken it so i had to do a full restore and upgrade the os to 4.1.

Now it's fully standard i think i'm just going to put an o2 PAYG sim in the phone and unlock it officially as the phone is no longer in contract. That way i don't have to mess around when new software/firmware comes out.
