Why are there so many VTRs for sale?

I keep seeing them pop up for sale on these boards. Are they just not that good of a bike? ok so they heavy for a sports bike and poor on fuel, but is there anything else 'wrong' with them?

I had one for four years and loved it. Tank was bigger by a couple of litres on later models, not the best handling bike either, although handling can be vastly improved by Roger at revolution racing, for not that much cash.
Ran mine through two winters, but it coped well and polished up pretty good when I got round to it.
Good bike IMHO for not much cash.

Tank range is exaggerated, its not that bad, specially with a power commander.

ITs faster than a TL1000R, ive owned and tracked both.

Suspention is top notch IF set up properly, if i sold my SP1 to a fat bloke, it would handle like utter dirt, because its set up for me.

Ive owned and ridden pretty much every modern mainstream V-twin going, and its not a bad bike, build quality will put 90% of new jap bikes to shame.

And it just so happens mine is for sale Smile

I think we should assume that the OP means a FireStorm rather than an RC51/SP1/SP2

Maybe because they are good bikes, but there are better bikes out there. It doesn't really fit any particular 'niche'. The Tank range is too poor for touring, and its not sporty enough to be a sportsbike.

Its just a big old Honda with a thumpy engine. Not saying that is a bad thing of course, because if I was told I could only have 1 bike for the rest of my life and it had to be a Firestorm I don't think I'd be too disappointed.

I thought they were meant to be Honda's answer to the sporty V twins of Ducati, but from the stats they do seem low on power compared to say a 90's inline four such as the fireblade, zx9r, gsxr etc..

Bit like a Ducati of the time, then Wink.

The hype preceding the TL-S and Firestorm was placing them as Ducati-beating sportsters. Reality was we as far as the Firestorm goes that we got a slightly sporty commuter, but not sporty enough to have decent ground clearance or more than adequate suspension, but then you chuck in the poor tank range and they don't seem to do much well.
Saying all that, they are probably more than most people will use on the road, at least if you hang off a bit lot, anyway Smile.

So yes, they might have suspect handling, be down on power and have pap tank range but look at the price. If you keep on top of the CCT's, they're damn reliable.

The TL on the other hand had suspect handling itself and eat their gearboxes. And your 15 year old GSXR750 (assuming SRAD) don't usually get over 40k.

So for their price? They're damn good value I'd say.

What you want is the best bits of a Japanese V-twin which would be the 135bhp TLR engine, fitted into a proper handling sports chassis, like the Bimota SB8R! (They gave it another 5bhp on top as well with bigger throttle bodies).

Now that is a 1litre V-twin thats really worth having! Anything less is just for girls! Laughing

i quite like them, i borrowed my bro's one for a bit, its feels a bit underpowered even compared to my 25 year old vf1000,
and it wasn't the best handling bike, and the stupid cam chain adjusters are an arse of a design (hence why i was lent the bike)
but as an all round bike, its pretty good, nice power delivery, enough power to do the job, and pretty comfy to boot,
couldnt really ask to much more from a bike.
