Oak Training, Preston?

Anyone ever heard of these?

The reason i ask is that my nephew turns 16 this month and his parents have booked him in for his CBT and bought him a brand new Derbi 50 thingy.

Anyway, when i did my training, my CBT lasted a whole day, this bloke is doing it at 4pm (after school) and says he'll be done by 6! WTF? He's never been on a bike before!!!!

Also, as my nephew is getting bought a geared 50, the training school say they don't have a geared 50, but he can practice on a 125, then go out on a scooter for the 1 hour road training.

Sounds like a very fucking dodgy outfit to me, unfortunately I have no say in where he gets trained.

Any experiences with them?

(by the way, i understand people just wanna get out on the road asap, but being a rider myself I just worry about the dangers out there for a young lad on a bike, I'm 35 with a full licence and it's bad enough!)

I wouldnt trust it. A cbt should only be awarded after a minimum of 2 hours out on the roads. If he starts at 4pm and claims to be finished by 6pm then theres no training time for anything at all.

When I done mine we spent about an hour discussing road safety etc and then a couple of hours on site running through basic manouvers like gear changes, junctions, hill starts etc. Then had a lunch break before spending a couple of hours out on the road.

This is what i thought mate. When i did mine, we spent all day sunday doing it from 8-3.

Like i said, i have no say in it but I was just wondering if anyone had first hand experience of them?

Sounds like a cowboy training school to me bud and I wouldnt go near it. If the law states a minimum on 2 hours road experience then regardless of what the training schools thoughts 2 hours should be done.

As you said, Your sister was done in the same time. They cant possibly cover a full cbt course in 2 hours. All they are doing is making money out of people and leaving them with not enough road training.

Phone around and ask how long a cbt takes in the other places in preston and if any come back with the same time frame I would be very surprised.

Even if he intends to tell people to come back another day he still needs reporting.
CBT cannot be done in 2 hours so to advertise it like that is false advertising.

Whats more worrying is that if he DOES hand out CBT certs after 2 hours of "training".

Maybe go down there yourself and have a chat with the guy. Find out what the story is and then decide what to do.
If he offers you a 2 hour CBT from start to certificate then you know there's something fishy going on

I've just spoken to his dad, and he said no time limit has been put on it, seems like i have my wires crossed (maybe!)

Guess i'll wait till he achieves his CBT and question him about how long he got on training, on road etc.

I don't want to be slagging off a school I know nothing about, so i'll wait and report back how they were etc after the date.

Try Riverview, they are based in Hesketh Bank in the the countryside, between Preston and Southport. They really are the best around. I trained with them and had a great time.

I'd highly recommend CSM1 in Chorley. They are the best around the Preston area in my opinion. Their website is www.CSM1.co.uk. They charge £80 for the day and Campbell who runs it is a great natural teacher, who is very patient and calm.

Just a thought, they may mean 4-6 every day for a week which would give enough time to complete it.

The 125 thing sounds helpful, but a little dodgy, asin if its too good to be true. That said, I didn't think you could ride a geared 50 at 16, or does 'moped' include geared as well as autos?

Can't comment on how they run their CBTs, but I did my DAS training with them a few years back.

For that, they were fine. The guy who owned it then had run the business for 20 years, and had attained the very highest level of instructor certification (qualified to train instructors too IIRC). It was no cowboy operation, just a family run business rather than a corporate business, which made it a little more casual than large schools, but none the worse for it IMO. It was also very good value.

Things may have changed...
