So being the end of summer and having to go to Bristol I decided I would take the bike and not the car (have got lazy lately) which resulting in a great 15 mile hard ride reminding me how fun riding is and how much better my front brakes are now I have EBC HH new pads on.

I get off the bike to see a puddle forming underneath. I shat myself as I changed the oil and filter this week when I did the front pads so first thoughts were the drain plug wasnt back in properly. Shocked

After closer inspection I find that the fluid is coming from some sort of overflow pipe and the fluid seems to be coolant (this is a guess as I have never really done much with coolant).

Bike (CB400sf)
https://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/andy13_uk/CB400%20Super%20Four/DSCF3800.jpg

Pipe where fluid came from:
https://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/andy13_uk/CB400%20Super%20Four/DSCF3801.jpg
https://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/andy13_uk/CB400%20Super%20Four/DSCF3803.jpg

My guess is that either the coolant was very low and so the heat duty and small volume made the remaining coolant boil

OR

The coolant pump has gone so it is not circulating properly.

Be be honest Im only guessing and would love some advice from people on here who know much more on this area than I do!

I have the manual (not 100% in english due to being a grey import bike) but will have a look over the weekend when I do the chain and sprokets.

Also, how do I find out whether the pump does work?

Any help/advice would be great! Karma Thumbs Up

Have you tried to peek and see where that hose goes to? That could just be the fuel breather pipe thingymagig which just drains water out of the top area of the fuel tank.

Its just coolant. Nothing to worry about, just make sure it's topped up to between max and min levels.

You said yourself you were riding hard, the bike just got hot and the fluid, which might have been overfilled, expanded.

How much coolant did it dump? If it dumped quite a lot of it, it could mean a blown head gasket.

This ^^. If it was a lot of coolant (pissing out rather than dribbling out), the head gasket could have let go. The exhaust gas blowing past it pressurises the coolant system and forces the fluid out.

If it was an overheat, most bikes have a warning light that should come on or a guage that would be in the red and the fan should have been going.

The water pump is generally either working or not working. If it's not working it would overheat as above (and would probably be making a horrendous noise too).

A quick and dirty test is to feel the radiator hoses as you rev the engine. If they go rock hard as you rev it, suspect the head gasket.

To check if it's coolant, dip your finger in it and taste it. Coolant has a sweet taste. Before doing this first convince yourself that it is 100% definately not battery acid (don't ask!).

Thanks for all the replies, the bike did not overheat and even after the coolant poured out it was at 30% on the heat dial.

I think it may just be low as none of the things mentioned sound like what happened.

Tank is coming off this Saturday so will check the coolant then and report back as may still not know what is wrong!

Hi

Is the radiator warm all over, or is the top cool and the bottom hot?

All the best

I will have a check tomorrow. Keith I was thinking of first checking the level of the coolant and then going from there. What else do you suggest I check?

Go for a short run then check to see if it's pissed it back out again.

Due to being in Bristol (15 miles from home) I had to ride home so took it very easy, checked the heat dial all the way home and stopped half way to check no boiling liquid.

It was fine on the way home so think it may just be low as surely after 15 miles if it was the head gasket it would have overheated?

Thanks for all the help so far Thumbs Up

On my Hornet , I lost a large amount of coolant after the level dropped low enough to be below the level of the fan switch so the bike overheated (on the Wooton Bassett ride no less). Topping it up sorted it.

30 mins of filtering on a carpark M6 resulted in spilt coolant on my hack Hornet earlier this week though I've no heat gauge on that one (aftermarket clocks)

I had coolant dump all over the place for two reasons so far. the first being very low oil, that meant the engine over heated, second was the radiator fan stopped working, bit of WD40 sorted that one out.
sometimes it can be your coolant ratio.
Go for the easy fixes first before you go down the gasket route.

If your new brakes are binding it will put extra load on your motor. Check your disks are not getting hot.

Not necessarily.

In my experience it's more rev dependant (which makes sense, the higher the revs, the higher the gas pressure in the engine). Last head gasket I had go (on a GPZ500s), you could ride the bike all day long as long as you didn't push the revs over 7,000rpm. As soon as you did go over that, it would start pissing coolant out almost immediately. You could JUST see the expansion bottle from a riding position and you could see it filling up as you went.

Not that I want it to be the head gasket mind but what you describe is exactly what happened on both bikes I've had blown head gaskets on (one due to me thrashing the knackers off it for an extended period, the other due to some idiot spanner monkey in a bike shop thinking it would be much quicker to clean up a gasket facing with a wire brush than all that tedious scraping). They pumped about half the coolant out of the radiator then overheated and boiled the remaining coolant.

Hi all,

Just had a closer look at the bike to see if I can see whats wrong!

Found the coolant tank and it seems that it was low-ish. This is my opinion is a good thing with what happened as may have meant that with ragging the bike the coolant in the bike could not cope with the heat duty. What is obvious is that the system needs flushing which is now on my to do list (along with chain and sproket and new brake fluid).

GF got rigged into making sure the tank didnt move and general handing tools to me Very Happy Very Happy

Did the air filter while I was there too....

https://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d20/andy13_uk/CB400%20Super%20Four/DSCF3808.jpg

I think the next thing is to take it for a proper ride and see if the radiator is consistant temp and also a full flush and refill of the system.

Does this look more or less likely to a head gasket? Thanks for all the help so far, need to get more clued up on the coolant system

Confused

The bike never overheated and I think when I stopped it was pouring out not dribbling.

I will go and rev it and feel the radiator hoses and see if they go rock hard. Should have check this earlier!

The more and more I think about it the more I think its this.

Anyone know how hard this is? Seems fairly simple taking the carbs off but its all the wires etc that makes me think it could get complicated Confused

Not good....

Does it have a radiator cap?
If so fill at the rad, not the expansion tank.
Expansion tank is there just to give water some-where to go when it expands, when engine cools down it should suck it back in.
But, if the coolant level goes low, you get an air-gap at the top of the rad.
So, if the engine is cool, and theres no contraction to suck water in from the expansion tank, filling the expansion tank, often the water will just stit there, making it LOOK like the level's fine, becouse the air in the rad has no way of escape and nothing pushing it out.
Then, you get the bike hot, air in rad gets hot, expands a LOT more than water would, and litterally blows the water out of the expansion tank.....
You see the tank empty or low, so fill from the expansion tank again.......
& you have a repetative fault!
IF you have a rad cap, ALWAYS fill from it.
If you DONT have a rad cap, look for a vent nipple on the rad, and after filling from the expansion tank, bleed excess air out of the rad to let the water you have put in get where its supposed to be.
Also check the spec to see whether you should be using water + antifreeze, or pure Glycol coolant, or a mix.

Just been outsite and have the bike a good rev and at NO point did the pressure inside the coolant pipe feel rock hard. Thats got to be a good sign right?

I did take it past 7k rpm as lots of neighbours around and the engine was cold but even at 7k it was still fair soft to press in.

Could it just be the coolant was low and needed topping up hense cool leaking out?

Sick There is a cap near the radiator. Silly me....

How do you know when it is at the right level or do you just fill to the top?

Fill to the top.
Fit cap.
Add coolant to the expansion bottle.
Loosen rad cap, let coolant in (higher) expansion bottle bleed down and purge any air in the system.
Watch to make sure expansion tank doesn't completely drain.
Let a little coolant dribble oit of the rad cap, so you know its purged of air.
Top up expansion tank to between level markers.
