I need to downsize from a car to the bike, i hate the rain and cold but i don't need to travel too far so i think i will be riding this winter.

Anything over 3hrs on a frosty day or driving rain and i feel it. Short trips, nae bother.

Slowly turning my ER in to a perfect winter bike. Got the milk bottle handguards and crash bars, just need some heated grips and some more lights as I'll be commuting at night once the days get shorter.
Might drape the bike in pink neon string and then add some L.E.Ds to the front of the bike like G and Chris.

Personal equipment: I need to get a pinlock insert, possibly a new jacket and some new boots.

Yes. But last winter knocked fuck out of my bike. I just got it MOTed today having had to rewire the dash, rebuild the rear calliper and master cylinder, replace the front stanchions, repaint the radiator, replace the oil cooler pipes, replace the shock and fit new front discs (bobbing totally seized).

All due to corrosion which for some reason this year was easily twice as bad as the previous three winters. I suspect the "sticky" salt/molasses mix they're using is to blame.

To prevent similar this year, I blasted the entire bike with a thick coating of waxoyl using a spray gun while I had all the bodywork off and I wont be washing it off again until spring. (a tried and tested technique, if somewhat messy).

Yeah worst bit is the extra loobing and cleaning of bike and kit.
Even if i got an old hack to use i'd end up keeping it tip top best i could, so financially not worth it.

This will be my 2nd year doing bike rides in the winter.
Before it was 2 miles to work on roads that were never empty so found it ok. But now I work out of town
Only travel 10 miles to work - However last year / Jan - the snow blocked me in Car park covered in Ice, no way I could move my bike for two weeks. I dont think anyone in the carpark moved for days.... so am thinking of parking just outside

Did last winter on a 98 'blade. Treated with ACF50, it was out almost every day over the winter (inc. snow/ice). Came out the other end just as clean as it was before.

This year: brand new Tuono. Am thinking a hack may be in order...

Curious to know what's preferred for the winter, faired bikes or non faired bikes. On one hand you have a lot of engine cleaning to do, on the other if you drop your bike due to winter weather you have fairings to replace. It is the only thing I think about when I wonder if I got the right bike

Faired every time. Keeps the weather off the rider, makes a huge difference to comfort levels

This year I will be mostly riding the gsxr as it is my only form or transport. Have to make a day trip to Bodmin, Cornwall at the end of this month too so that should be interesting if its miserable weather.

Last year I was on my 125 heap.

No, I won't. Standard insurance here runs from the start of April until the end of October, so by the end of the month, both bikes will be prepped for storage and locked in the shed until the spring.

I used to ride all year round in the UK, but last winter here we had a metre of snow and temperatures down to -35C. I am mad, but not that mad

sure will be riding all winter, you need something light and not too slow really, and low saddle, i usually go for a 350 YPVS but you have to be a fair mechanic to keep the things going all winter, IL4 are too heavy to pick up in the snow and go down with a sudden bang when it goes wrong, and old trailies are better than newer ones as you need to be able to get your feet firmly on the ground, plus you don't want anything too slow as when it is actually dry in the winter you can get a move on

1 can will do 2 bikes. I buy a can and manage to recoat my bike 3-4 times. I tend to was the bike every month and recoat it just to rinse off all the salt. Apply onto a microfibre clot and rub vigorously onto exposed parts (obviously NOT your seat, controls or discs).

I love my bike during winter. You can really see how much you can trust your tyres and feel for grip. I've never been stopped by the snow.

If you have a honda, italian bike or any bike susceptible to electrical niggles, MAKE SURE you sort them out because whilst breaking down in summer is inconvenient at best, breaking down in winter is hazardous!
