What is the best way to "winter proof" my bike and myself??

The restrictions:
1, Needs to be done as cheap as possible
2, Everything has to fit a CG125
3, Needs to be easy as possible to fit if going on the bike

Already won this on ebay to cover it at night https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190427305020&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I Have textile jacket and trousers also leather 2piece would it be best to get a 1 piece waterproof job?

any help would be good

Thanks

Service the bike, ACF - 50 as much of the bike as possible then check your tyres are decent with good tread and the jobs a good 'un.

2 piece textiles kept me snug as a rug and dry in this mornings 6am torrential downpour.

No it's not. Let autumn be autumn please, let me enjoy the fruits off the trees and the changing shades of the leaves and the crisp fresh mornings before you go leaping into winter!!! Rolling Eyes

You know its autumn because on country roads you are having near misses with conkers and wet leaves. Idea

I was daft enough to stand under a Horse Chestnut tree the other day. Bloody hurt landing on my head.

CG 125

Well you answered your own question there!

I wouldn't bother with heated grips on a CG125. They draw quite a bit of current that you'll probably be overwhelming what puny charging system you have.

Bar muffs are cheaper and are more effective at keeping the wind off your hands. Heated grips only apply a small tickle of warmth to your palm but not the top side of your hands and fingers! Needless to say I had neither of them and still proceeded to brave winter with only my A* Tech Road gloves - the only thing i did was gaffa tape up the vents on the knuckles.

That ALL Year Biker thing is pants and is purely for lazy people who can't do the job themselves. The CG125 is an excellent winter hack and every part is accessible. Spray all exposed metal work or anything susceptible to road salt in ACF 50 - apply on a rag and rub your bike with it. As I've said in previous posts, grease ALL connectors and cables to make sure they're adequately lubricated.

In terms of what YOU need to do. Get some cheap thermals from primark and dress in layers. Kidney belts often go on sale at ALDI for REALLY cheap (£3-5 compared to Hein Gericke's £15-20) and make a HUGE difference.

If your textiles are goretex, don't worry about getting waterproofs. Depending on how far you're willing to travel, once you're wet, you're wet. The time it takes for you to get your waterproofs on mid journey, you're already soaking wet, so it's not going to make a blind bit of difference. Meterologically speaking, if it's raining, chances are you'll have cloud cover so it'll bring the temperatures up during winter. So you WONT be left WET AND COLD. If you're still worried just get something to cover your top. I'd rather have wet legs and be able to NOT have my waterproofs catching on things like my gear lever or crash bungs for instance.

I'd worry more about the crisp cold days rather than the rain so in which case get yourselves some decent gloves - HG panthans do nicely if you can't afford the £100 gortex stuff. You DO have a massive trade off between feedback/control and warmth/comfort... but then again if you have bar muffs, you'll be fine.

I also wouldn't bother with that cover. Go to your nearest bike shop and see if they have any Oxford Rainex Covers in store - 40 quid and job's a good un! I can vouch for it!

Lastly, change your oil, check your brake pads and calipers and you'll be fine. You don't have to worry about changing your coolant on your CG!

It lasts for as long as you DON'T WASH YOUR BIKE with bike cleaner. It's designed not to react to water but bike cleaner/solvents WILL wash it off. It'll technically last you all winter but it leaves your bike looking like it's been covered with bumfluff! So I just reapply everytime I wash the bike (every month during winter) whilst i'm checking a few systems over. Scottoiler FS365 is the one that wears off after a few rain cycles though. £13 quid for the ACF50 and you're laughing... although they do a £50 industrial size that's meant to be applied using a spray.

Kidney belt constricts your abdomen so it tries to prevent any heat from leaving your core to the extremities... i.e. your feet. If your're wearing a 2 piece, it also helps to stop wind getting through the seams of your jacket/belt.

Studded tyres are legal on ice and snow but you'd have to remove them when you got to a gritted and/or clear bit of tarmac, because they are then illegal, so it hardly seems worth it.

Make sure your forks are clean and free or rust/pits and fit fork gaiters. Thumbs Up As others have said, wash it and cover it in ACF50.

Give your brakes a good thorough clean up (brush behind the piston dust seal etc, strip, clean and grease up drum brake mechanisms) and service (new seals/fluid, pads, shoes etc), if they need it. In fact give the whole bike a decent service before winter sets in as the cold weather will make it hard work later on.

Also, on fastners that face a lot of crap from the roads (like bolts holding on the mudguard to the forks), I would apply copper grease to the threaded parts before putting stuff back together. In fact, I do this with pretty much every fastner I remove when servicing/fixing stuff etc. Apart from the ones that require thread locking compound, of course! I've personally never had anything rattle loose that I've copper greased and have covered a lot of miles (thousands) since starting to do it. It makes removing them so much easier and you won't end up rounding off heads or worse, snapping them off as the fastner has become so corroded it seized with the hole it was screwed into.

Yes, but work a hell of a lot better with heated grips. Same can be said of having just heated grips, you need them both for the best effect.

Consider undergloves as a cheap alternative to muffs or heaters. Used them for a few winters and they work well

I've got a set of oxford muffs for winter... they look like HUGE ears on the little 125.
Might want to use the cheap way and have milk bottles attached to the bars Laughing
