Chicken in the Woods

I went out foraging today, and I came back home with a carrier bag full of wild apples, half a bag full of sloes, a handful of many different varieties of things that look like rose hips, but in closer inspection they all have different leaves and slightly different shaped fruits!!

But I was actually (on the second trip out) looking for Chicken in the Woods, but found many different types of fungi instead.

I brought two massive ones home, which I THOUGHT where Chanterelle, but on looking at the poisonous ones, I'm now not so sure....

Any experts...? Can anyone identify my collection...?

(Oh and I saw a group of 5 heron all sitting in the lake where I was walking this afternoon)...shame my camera doesn't zoom in too well.

This one might possibly be a form of Honey fungus but I'm not entirely sure. Honey Fungas can be toxic if eaten raw but it's also similar to a few other really toxic ones aswell.

Think this may be False Chanterelle, does it smell of apricots or radish. If it's apricots it's Chanterelle if it's radish then its False Chanterelle. It does look really really dark though, too dark to be Chanterelle.

Btw I'm not an expert, used to go picking with my dad when I was younger and have a few books on mushrooms that I have read, so I'm not held accountable for your death lol.

Top one is a bracket fungus or some sort. Probably edible but probably also extremely bitter and with a texture like cardboard.

Second one is difficult to make out. I don't like the look of the purple coloured bruising round the edge of them. Purple staining/bruising is usually a bad sign.

Third and fourth ones down, be very wary indeed. I wouldn't touch anything withg white gills unless I was 100% certain of exactly what it was. Some of the deadliest ones have white gills (while some are edible, and others, nobody knows or is prepared to find out).

Chantrelles are easy to identify. They are bright, egg-yolk yellow and funnel shaped. They are about 1/2 to 1" across and grow in clumps like someone threw a yellow scarf on the ground from a distance. We used to pick and sell these back home (worth a lot of money).

Chicken in the woods is another that is pretty unique. As is wood hedgehog and giant puffball.

You really need a good field guide to start foraging for fungi. Takes into account size, colour, thickness, texture, location, gill colour, bruising colour and odour. Even then, there are some that look very similar to one another.

So assuming you are 100% happy with what you've picked and can name it, always cook them, never eat loads of one sort. Again, I was always told that anything with white gills is risky.

Most "poisonous" ones are poisonous to the extent you get a sore gut and a lot of the poisons are inactivated by cooking.

I'll happily pick and eat chantrelles, ceps and field or horse mushrooms. Others, I'm just not confident enough about.

The huge white ones, the first picture - have white gills...they smell like mushrooms, they have a wavy head, and a thick truck...but what makes me wary is they have a sticky/wet surface...not dry.

So I have just left them outside for the time being (undercover).

I was looking for the really obvious ones...Morels, Chicken in Woods, Puffballs, Chanterelles...but didn't.

I'm thinking the big white ish one, might actually be a Wood Urchin / Wood Hedgehog...got to check whether its got spines or gills when I get home later...

Not wishing to state the obvious...

If you really want some mushrooms and would prefer not to die horribly, why not just buy some in a shop?



PS: Some one once told me if the mushroom/funghus was growing more than 5 or 6 feet of the ground then it was ok to eat. We tried it and it wasn't really until afterwards we sat down and thought about how much we trusted this advice which came from someone we didn't really know that well at all.

I know me ceps/field/chanterelle and puffballs. I'm not clued up on the many others, so leave alone.

FYI flyagaric will give you gut ache and is difficult to dose correctly unlike libertys which may give you gut ache and are easy to manage....So i'm told...

Best thing to do with fly agaric is chop it and boil it in a little milk, let it steep overnight then pour a little of said milk into a saucer on the windowsill.

Come back next day and marvel at how all the flies that were in the room are now lying dead in the saucer.

I once ate a puffball, sliced and fried in butter, it was delicious. Generally though I wouldnt eat wild mushrooms, as I think it would be easy to mis-identify.

I certainly would not eat something on the say so of someone from BCF.
