Just got chatting to a lady I know and it turns out she works in a theory test centre. She told me that the thing which frightens her most are "middle aged men doing their bike theory after driving a car for years". Apparently when they walk in it's a 50/50 chance that they will fail and it's generally in the same place - road signs. They are also far more likely to "kick off and cause a bit of a fuss" than their much younger counterparts who turn up on "horrible day-glo mopeds"

Test center lady has a rather low opinion of these chaps "you can see the mid life crisis in their eyes".

I havent gotten around to doing my car test yet and I'm looking forward to my midlife crisis. Instead of having a break down and buying a bike I might get a car instead.

What a load of rubbish!! Anyone who makes an effort to prepare a bit after driving a car for years & getting into a few bad habits will be fine with theory test.

Sounds like she has a boulder on her shoulder Confused

I think that's the point Crystal, a lot of people who never had to do the theory test when they passed in a car are not preparing and are showing that have a frightening lack of knowledge about road safety when they are in their cars.

I don't think any of them would be reading this thread though as it's in a new bikers section of a forum, I would expect to come across them on thisbikeistoopowerfullforme.com creating threads like:

Which Kawasaki?

I recently passed my DAS and am wondering which one I should get the 1400 ZZR or the GTR?

Yes, I suppose that could be true. Having not had to take a car theory test myself, I was the exact opposite - made sure I knew what was expected, and did several mock tests beforehand. Never thought about that being unusual!

And?

Not sure what you're trying to say. I had my car licence for 13 years before I took my DAS.

Given that without a theory pass you can't take the DAS, your mate's experience simply suggests that middle aged candidates are less likely to revise.

Last time I looked, it's a free(ish) country. If someone fresh out of the DAS wants to buy a big sports tourer, or an R1, then more power to them. Heck, if a 17 year old fresh out of the a2 wants to ride an unrestricted bike, then fair enough.

Who are you to say what people should and shouldn't ride?

I only passed my car test 3 years ago after riding bikes for 33 years. I never had to do a theory test of any sort, just the driving bit.

Middle aged car driver here. The chap at the reception desk asked me - as I walked up the the desk 'motorcycle theory test' (or words to that effect it was a year ago) without even seeing my appointment letter. The mid life crisis must have been screaming out.

I did my driving test 25 years ago, when the theory bit was 3 questions in the car before being told you'd passed. This time round, I revised for my theory as I didn't want to fail, and the highway code had changed a fair bit.

Also, my wife got 100% for her theory test a couple of years ago, so there was 'pressure'.

Me too, revised like crazy, needed to pass, can't afford to be throwing money away by failing...

IMHO, the theory test is a waste of time and money.
It would be better if you actually had to know the highway code in preparation for random questions on the day of the test.

Wait: That's what it used to be like...

I suppose it has, because nowadays you have a bigger chance of coming across things which you need to think about.

I have a 1979 'Department of Transport Manual' essentially a driving book that I got for my 18th from my Grandpa. And reading through, 90 per cent of it is still extremely valid in how to cope with situations. The 10 per cent being use of the choke which of course is more or less obsolete now even on old bangers.
However, my first car and my present has choke and it gives you that edge about technical knowhow that other young drivers know naff all about. Thumbs Up

So where does the modern woman hang her handbag if there is no choke knob to use Question

Meh, both the theory test and hazard perception test are ridiculously easy.

Didn't revise for my car one, just turned up a booking on a cancellation that was the next day, went in and nailed it, absolutely fine.

Didn't revise for my bike one and did the same.

Just requires common sense, most difficult question: "what is a cover note used for?"

I'd never bought insurance however out of a choice of "road tax, temporary driving licence, vehicle log book and insurance"... It was obvious, only thing that covers something is insurance. You tax something, you hold a licence, you keep a logbook, you are covered by insurance.

Simples. If you really need to revise for the theory test to get a pass damn... That's shocking. Even the braking distance questions were a piece of cake when turned into multiple choice.

For comparison of tests, car test sat in 2007, bike test sat in 2009.
