Had my first off this morning on the way to work. Riding at a very sensible speed around a roundabout (20mph or so), when I see cars waiting at a red light ahead of me. Ease off of the throttle, and start applying a little front brake.

Then the front end just seems to lose all grip, and down I go. Slide along the road into the back of the car ahead of me, and then the bike joins me. Lying there very winded, loads of drivers get out and check that I'm ok Very Happy Thumbs Up Ambulance and police turn up a couple of minutes later, and I get carted off on a spinal board. All very exciting stuff. Nothing was wrong with me, textiles saved from any road rash. Right knee hurts a lot from the impact with the road, but it could have been a lot worse.

Still not sure what could have caused the front end to go like that? Low speed, not turning, light brake application. The road was greasy, but no more so than usual.

Anyway, here are some pictures of the once beautiful VFR, and the obligatory Paint diagram. Thanks to the Paramedics for getting me off of the road Very Happy

This.

Its starting to get into the silly season for bikes. The roads are getting greasier because of the rain and leaves falling off trees.

TPFT only, so I'll be paying out for all the costs Sad Marking it as a "fault" claim, which I assume means it is classed as only my fault.

Wonder how much this is going to cost me.... definitely saw brake fluid pissing out the front Confused

Why are you claiming? If you've hit the car, report it to the insurers 'for information only'. Regardless of what the other party do, you're not the one making a claim.

I didn't claim, just told them. I think that the blame thing is in case the car I hit wants to claim off of me. It was me that hit the car though, not the bike, and I should be soft enough not to damage it Very Happy

Gutted mate, I hate stuff like this how you cannot really put your finger on it, gives you a sense of unease. There isn't really an obvious point to turn around and say 'I won't do this again'.

P.S. Nice username, change your avatar to Fry on it hahaha

Nothing, that is it. You have to walk to work and save up to repair the bike out of your own pocket.

Who recovered the bike and too where....

If it was the police, then get it out of the pound sharpish or you will end up with a big storage bill.

As to what you do after that, is get it repaired. Looks mostly cosmetic damage. Except for the way the exhaust has been pushed in.

I took that as the bike was recovered to his home.

Otherwise, yeah get it the hell out of the pound

I don't understand why you now have a fault claim on your record?
You have a 'hit slippery road surface and damaged own bike, no claim'.

Back brake is handy for braking at low speeds, front brake for braking at higher speeds. It took me two drops to learn this.

If you want something to take away from it:

Advanced training will teach you how to better keep it upright when you loose the front end.

To be honest G1, short of slamming your foot down there isn't A lot you can do to lose the front end, but yes advanced training will help your confidence and improve your riding.

Like Jam said there isn't much you can do. Just hope you're perfectly balanced on the bike and you're braking in a straight line when it happens.

I've had the front slide a few times. Haven't come off because of it yet though. First time the bike almost toppled over and I was shook violently and smacked my foot against the road. That hurt like a bitch. But it wasn't anything I did, bar letting go of the front brake for it to keep upright. The other times I just slid forwards a tiny bit.

There's technique to saving a rear slide, but not so much in having the front slide.
