NAs Drives?

Right all,

Got a timecapsule on route for mac backups, but now need something for media backups and streaming to our computers.

I have about 3tbs of stuff to share via homeplug/WIFI so need a 3 or 4 bay NAS for redundancy.

Any ideas what to look at that wont break my bank card in 7 places?

Might be worth seeing if you can pick up one of the older HP MediaSmart home servers. Way more functionality than most NAS boxes and fairly cheap now given how much you can load them up. Tons of modding potential too, you'll want to upgrade the ram on an early one, possibly swap the psu out with a quieter one too.

I would however with the timecapsule, I will be running macs and the homeserver is not 100% friendly with OSX yet.

I'm quite happy with my Netgear Ready NAS Duo, it's only a 2 slot NAS with a pair of 2tb drives in but its reliable, does a good job of streaming FLAC and movies, has support for time machine backups and is pretty quiet (with a Fractal 60mm fan fitted). I had a Thecus NAS before that was a bit noisier and the software on it was crap. it wouldn't let you enable upnp which made it totally useless. Thecus acknowledged the problem and were working on a fix so I returned it and bought the Netgear.

I would definitely buy another Netgear, they have also got a decent support forums which are very useful.

I have been looking at the readynas NVs and NV+

Just need to see how noisy they are now considering USB drive are barely audible unless being accessed.

What to buy what to buy!?

how computer literate/techno geek are you?
may be worth buying an old pentium 4/core 2 box and sticking a load of hard drives in. can pick up a p4 for under £50 and installing a linux OS or freeNAS or something similar on it.
i picked up a free business pc with a 2.6 celeron processor and that does that job of a home server. all in all cost me £77 for a 2Tb hard drive

I work in IT support so pretty geeky.

I would build a machine but our flat isnt really big enough to too take one plus some decent (and expensive) NAS drives have all the UPNP/SMP features in there.
