Posted: 17:11 - 05 Oct 2010 Post subject: Alternative paddock stand - how does it work? |
 |
|
This stand was posted in General Bike chat, but I thought if I ask my question in here it's more likely to be seen by those who might know the answer. So...
..this is the alternative paddock stand;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nzax29SzMyg
and I want to make one.
The only thing that I can't work out, is how the mechanism that actually lifts the bike works, as it looks like it's hidden in the body of the stand.
There's a lot of travel on the lifting arm obviously, but it only appears to move the smaller arm connected to it a little way. What I'm trying to work out is how that small movement is converted into the bigger movement of actually lifting the bike up to get the wheels far enough off the ground.
Any engineers (or generally clever people) in that could explain, or even better draw us a diagram?
Cheers! ____________________ A Guide To Powerbands |

Red dots are pivots, the black bits are metal, and the gold bit is what's attached to the bike. Left diagram is the bike on the ground, right is it in the air.
Looks to me as though it's held at the top by a hole in the main post and a spring loaded pin that pops into this hole when it reaches the top.
Edit: Also, (and I think this is correct) if we look at the main handle at the top, if the handle is four times longer from the pivot than the other side then you have to put four times less effort in to lift the bike, so longer handle = easier lift |

From the layout of the supports it might not be a good idea to sit on the back seat with the front wheel out |

2:22 to 2:28 shows exactly how the works line up
Same as in MarkJ drawing.
If you are going to make on, I can think of a improvement....
Add another leg to the base... If someone lent on the RHS it could easily tip over as there is no outboard support on the LHS ____________________ Just because my bike was A DIVVY, does not mean i am...... |

Seems far to bloody complicated to me.
All you need is a bit of wood or an axle stand.
Squat next to the bike on the right hand side with the bike on the sidestand. Push up and away against the tailpiece with your left hand. The back wheel will come up off the road. Put your bit of wood/axle stand under it.
If you do the same again the other way, you can put another bit of wood/stand under the other side in the same way.
If you have a single sided swingarm, the alternative is to turn the footpeg upside down and put your bit of wood under that. Or put it under the frame near the footpeg hangers.
Takes no more physical effort than putting one on a paddock stand. Has just as many points of contact (ie. 3).
If you want to go one further, jack up in front of the engine too

I dont want to draw attention to it but...... Your subframe looks missing and some bugger's stolen your wheels.
That'll never ride well ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

If I woke up on christmas morning and the girlfriend had bought me one of these I would marry her. Awesome bit of kit and I can see it going well in my garage.
Last time these things came up I remember thnking how awesome they were. Bit pricey though
Someone best start making a more generic one soon that costs £50 ____________________ RS125 > CBR6 > SV650S > ZX636R > GSX1300RZ Hayabusa > 06 RSVR Mille > SV1000S > Street Triple 765 RS |
