A query about the hazard perception test and an observation.

The clips that you're shown (and the practice ones you can use), I was wondering, are they random bits of film that the DSA have captured, have they just gone round filming waiting for something untoward to happen? Or are some of them set up? I only ask 'cos some of the things that happened on the clips I saw this afternoon were examples of ridiculously bad driving. Although what made me think they were real scenarios was the clip of the biker almost getting knocked of by a SMIDSY pulling out of a side road and the biker giving them a right mouthful!

Anyone know for definite?

I do know since practising for the hazard perception, it seems to have really sharpened my reading of the road. Which can't be a bad thing after almost 25 years driving?

I find the driver sometimes makes silly decisions also. Like squeezing through and obviously magnifying a problem by not doing anything about it early on.

I think they must have driven round in lots of different cars and places for 1000's of miles.. some of the clips are shocking when you watch them (on mine a car tried to turn right into an oncoming artic ) was defo not set up..
a few of mine I thought the driver of the camer car had made things worse too

They all feel really staged, so that there are several obvious hazards. If they were to film it on some real roads (like Whitchurch Road in Cardiff on a weekday morning) you'd wear the mouse out having to click it so much!

Yup they're all staged. Some of those clips the drivers would get done for dangerous driving!

I'm pretty sure they just stuck digital video cameras on their employees' dashboards (or maybe that of willing instructors) connected to a big ol' hard disk, and either paid people to sift thru the hours of footage on FFWD, or had a button in-car that the driver could mash when they noticed potential golden footage occurring.

I've captured two or three of those "WTF" type moments just on a random test-recording I did trying to mount my digicam in my car. Wedged it in the headrest and did a lap of the outskirts of a nearby park.
Think my favourite was the old codge who tried to go for a gap that totally wasn't there, spun the wheels (wet tarmac) and somehow managed to stall his fiesta at the same time. Cue me sliding to a halt (no ABS in the old car, which eventually led to it being written off...), more for show than out of necessity... though he was blocking my lane. All on camera, yeronner. Alongside your everyday discourteous driving, various could-be-hazards-but-never-develop, etc. Remember that each clip only tends to have one "major" event in it, and occasionally two, alongside a plethora of silly little ones that have you clicking away like billy-o. And if there's more than 50 of them in total I'd be very surprised.

Possibly some of the minor bits are staged, but I bet most of the major ones aren't. You'd get in all manner of shit if you tried to fake something like that on the public highway but made a harris of it and caused an actual crash.
