Hi All,

I've just booked up to go skiing in January and looking to prepare for it as cheap as possible!

That means raiding Fleabay for goggles, thermals etc and possibly using my bike gear on the Piste.

I'm sure my Oxford bone dry gloves will be sufficient for the slopes but will my big, thick waterproof textile jacket & trousers?

Has anyone else been skiing usiong motorcycle clothing? How did you get on?

Still debating wether the helmet is a bit too far Wink

Hi,

I would see if you have any Ski rental places near you. When I went the year before last I rented a jacket and salopettes for around £25, bought some Bolle ski goggles for £20 and gloves for £15.

I'm going this winter and just bought a stupidly expensive North Face Ski jacket, well worth it for the quality though!

Where you going?

TK Maxx is good for ski & outdoor gear.

I wore my bike jacket last time I was up Ben Nevis (also used the gear for Cairn Gorm.) It worked quite well although I tore open my bike waterproof troo's with my ice axe while digging a snow hole.

Oops.

Thumbs Up

I'll have a look around for somewhere I could hire...Thanks for that!

I'm off to Borovets, Bulgaria. I did go about 10 years ago to Austria and always said i'd go again...just 10 years too late!

I would still be interested to know if anyone has kitted themselves out in motorcycle gear when skiing.

Don't.

Ski gear is warm and flexible. Bike gear is warm and armoured. You don't be able to move anything like enough in bike gear.

Have a look on ebay, there are a few shops doing the whole lot of ski gear for about £80. Dare2B is cheap gear.

You can wear it, but as others have said, look in TK Maxx or ebay first.

The kit is designed to keep you warm when you are sitting still, so when you start moving about it can tend to get a little hot (esp if you are wearing thermals too)!

I started my season this year wearing my bike trousers as my salopettes ripped the last time I was out and I completely forgot until I looked them out to go. I took the knee armor out and just got on with it. They were plenty warm enough but they weren't as comfy as regular salopettes - my knees rubbed on the pockets where the armor went, and when you're pounding the slopes for the whole day it can get a bit irritating.

That said, I continued to use them for the rest of the season (well untill i broke my ankle anyway) so they were perfectly acceptable. Never wore my jacket, but did see a fair few folks who did - again it will be quite restrictive.

I'd advise against using bike gloves if you can, the armor will get in the way with your poles, and seeing as they have to come off for every lift/tow you'd get a bit pissed off. You'll get a decent pair on ebay for about £20-30.

failing that, keep an eye out for Lidl and Aldi - they occasionally do ski gear, it's pretty cheap and is actually quite decent (being German companies, they kind of like their skiing). I still use my Aldi jacket as a back-up

This. The last time I went skiing I loaded up with micro fleeces, took my walking jacket and bought some second hand salopettes for a tenner. You want lots of thin layers rather than wearing a thick armoured jacket.

I bought my snowboarding jacket and trousers from TK Maxx. Cost ~£30 each.

Also, cheap and skiing don't really go hand in hand. Allow a grand all in for the holiday.

A colleague went to Bulgaria last year and the whole holiday cost £400! Saying that my last trip to Val Thorens was so good I will happily pay £1000 to do it again.

My motorbike gloves got soaked.
Only done 'gentle' skiing/sledding in a motorbike jacket and was ok.

I bought some of my ski kit from TKMaxx and ended up with a Segura jacket by accident! Embarassed It was before I had started biking and didn't realise it was a bike jacket; it was on the racks with the ski gear and had a picture of a skiier on the Knoxx label, so I bought it thinking it was a ski jacket. It was only once I'd got it home and googled the make that I realised. I thought about taking it back but I was happy with it and hadn't seen any others I liked and fitted. It was absolutely fine for me and as a learner I spent an inordinate percentage of my 'snow time' rolling about in the snow, so it's waterproof and thermal qualities were well tested! Rolling Eyes

I had to buy my salopettes and gloves new (couldn't get my size at TKMaxx) and got them from Cotswold Camping - Animal pants and Marmot gloves. Neither were top whack expensive and both held up well. I managed to lose a popper on the left ankle when I went down heavily, but no dramas!

I went for the layers options and bought quite a few thermal/thin fleece tops, socks and a fetching woolly hat all discounted too! IIRC it all came to about £150 with my goggles as well.

Did you take your ski gear then?

I'm going to the French alps in a couple of weeks and I'm wondering how much of my bike gear I can get away with taking...

If you want to stay toasty warm look for a dew liner suit. I have one which I wear very rarely but I wouldn't part with it. Very light and VERY warm even in the coldest weather.

These people are out of stock but you see them on eBay from time to time.
