Pillion Phone Use

Was out with the girlfriend t'other night and she whips out her phone and starts texting the mother from the back of the bike. Got me thinking... is it legal for the passenger to be on the phone/texting/one handing? what are the laws on this? got me cuuuuurious

Yeah, don't see a legal problem but it would certainly p*ss me off if I thought my pillion wasn't concentrating.

Was thinking of the lack of grip on the bike mainly, so nobody knows of anything written in law about it. what about one handers as the rider? would it be classed as not being in full control of the machine or driving without due care and attention or something along those lines?

I think it's illegal as the same rules apply to the pillion as they do to the rider. Same for dark visors etc.

I don't think you'd get away with a drunk pillion either.

i havent done and research into this but always wondered about the drunken passenger thing...

aslong as their feet are on the pegs and there at least holding on surely its fine if they have had 4 pints??? maybe not so if there 10 or more and completely sozzled.

it would probably be a judgement call if an officer pulled u up. if your unable to operate the bike properly and safley because of the passenger then i reakon you would have to leave them there.

i wouldnt take a pissed up person on my biek though to be honest.

texting is fine, you can hold on with one hand. for apassenger anyway.

A lot of bikes have nothing to hold on with anyway.

I heard an uncorroborated rumour that being caught carrying a drunk pillion gets the rider done for carrying an unsafe load.

My girlfriend is awful for falling asleep on the back of my bike. You just feel a telltale thump between your shoulderblades as she falls over forwards. Then it's the dilemma of do you wake her up and risk her startling or just carry on as normal?

I have threatened to bungee her feet to be pegs before today.

Hi

No requirement for the pillion to have to hold on (although there is now a requirement for there to be a handhold for a pillion), so can't see that being a reason that they are not allowed to use a phone. And can't see how there lack of concentration / looking where you are going is a problem (no requirement that the pillion can actually see).

a) they'd taken their gloves off to do it,

b) they had a long walk home.

I would have thought that the chance of dropping the phone would put most people off doing this! The last thing I'd want would be my phone skidding off down the road at 30 mph!

I have text whilst riding a few times, the first time I done it though I didn't sort of click on what I was doing until I had to stop for lights and put my phone away. At that point I thought oooo fuck lol.
