Just had a bit of excitment on the way home from work today. Woman decides to drive straight on, even though the road turned right. Fortunatly, the wall stopped her going to far! I was right behind her when it happened, so out I get, have a look and ask if she's ok. She was out cold and snoring. That's when the training kicked in, and I did what I had to do. Ambulance called, and was there in 5 minutes(ish). She came round within a few minutes, was then taken out the car, strapped up tight, and put in the ambulance. At that point I was told I was allowed to go, so here I am now telling you lot.
Moral of the story is, if you haven't done an fbos course, go and get booked one now. You could save someones life.

Hang on...

You saw a woman crash because she fell asleep and you called an ambulance.

I am pretty sure everyone would do this. Also lol and take pics.

Good work, I'll have to have a look at that course. I've been first on the scene at three accidents in the last couple of years, only one of them caused injury, and luckily the lad was conscious and just needed help getting out of his car.

I wouldn't like to have to stand idly by while waiting for the emergency services.

p.s.

One thing that did surprise me though, while I said I was first on the scene, that isn't strictly true. in fact we were the first to stop at the scene with all three accidents.
Quite a number of drivers carried on past, even though it was clear that people needed help Shocked

I don't know of she crashed because she fell asleep, or just lack of concentration, but when I said she was snoring, it's a sign of airway being blocked. The time I was there waiting was taken up with holding her head straight so she could breath. That's one of things fought on the course

learned the basics of first aid and Trauma when I was in the Marines
how to use whats around you to help people injured or in our case shot or blown up
and assess injury's, take pulse etc and how to apply field dressings or give morphine
pity we were not allowed to play with the real thing, injecting a dummy with water is no fun
also did basic first aid when I was a boy scout all those years ago

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up for being in the right place at the right time

cupping both hands around the neck can be used to immobilize someone thats out cold but still maybe moving when you suspect neck or airway injury
if you have no other means of support

You weren't concerned about a civil lawsuit if you "contributed to her injuries" by moving her head then? In this "Where there's blame, there's a claim" culture, I would be.

I didn't tae photos, so no chance of me posting them I'm affraid!
The course was free, as I did it as part of the bikesafe course in north Wales, which was free, but they will now have to start charging. Some counties may still be free though.
As for the law suit, I'm not worried at all. As I'm not a medical professional, there's nothing she could have done if I made things worse. The instructor did go into the law on it a bit, but it's all to do with being a good Samaritan. It's the same as taking off the helmet of a crashed biker. Very easy when you know how, but if someone is choking to death on vomit, is it better to let them die, or take the risk and take the helmet off to clear the airway?

IIRC on the continent this is an offence Confused I understood that you are obliged to stop and help which is another reason for having the Hi-Viz and First Aid kits in the car. I know that you have to be careful where you stop, so as not to obstruct the Emergency Services when they arrive. I'd say I'd always stop, but after being overtaken (speed limit area) and then following along behind a complete knob yesterday I'd have happily driven on if he'd ended up in a ditch/hedge Embarassed

Uhuh? Is that what they're calling it these days?? Wink

I've always had first aid certificates of one form or another and I don't think I've ever had to use any of it in this way, had the odd cut and graze to deal with with the kids but thats about it.

The only time in the past ten years (atleast) I've ever attempted to deploy the training I got smacked around by a gang of Poles for my effort.

The training I did years ago for the Scout Association's own first aid certificate is actually designed so you never touch the kid. If they cut themselves you tell them to apply immediate pressure etc. If its a plaster, you open it and hand it to them to put on.

Fuck knows what we're supposed to do if they stop breathing, fan them with a palm frond or something.

When I did my St Andrew's first Aid training, they said people you've treated generally can't sue you unless it was something grossly out of order (unnecessary cupping or somesuch thing.) I wouldn't want to bet on it though.

Wink

Anyone who stops to consider legal ramifications of helping someone in serious need of first as should question why they bothered to do the course in the first place.

I've put my training to use twice this year, both looked very serious initially. One guy was a pedestrian who got launched over a shoulder-height wall by a speeding driver and had claret all over his face from having it smashed into a windscreen, looked bad but wasn't serious at all.

The second was a biker who tried to filter past a queue of traffic waiting for a red light to change, by using a cycle lane on the left. He got caught out when the leading vehicle turned left. This guy went up in the air and came down and wasn't moving, so I had to get his visor open to check he was breathing. The crowd which had congregated on the path tried to intervene when I started prising open his visor and I told them all to shut up, and carried on. If that guy had suffered neck injuries, they yeah I could have made them worse and he would have had several good witnesses to aid his claim but the priority was to make sure he was breathing. Worrying about being sued didn't come into it - making sure the guy didn't choke to death in his helmet was my first concern.
