Very bouncy rear suspension

I had my bike in at a garage getting new braided hoses done. Now that I've had it back I'm convinced they've adjusted my rear suspension. I don't really know much about the suspension and haven't tried adjusting it myself yet. (I'll do that tonight) When I first sit on the bike now it bounces up and down a couple of times. Where as before it just sank down. Every bump springs me up in the air too, off the seat sometimes. It does seem a bit better on the corners though.

The question I have is, is the suspension supposed to be like this? I would have thought it was set up wrong normally if it was like this. But having it back from the garage and it's different all of a sudden makes me think that it's supposed to be like this.

That sounds like no damping.

Could be that they had a rather enthusiastic test ride and blew the seal in the rear shock, it was probably tired already. Look at it for any signs of oil on the shock body or below it.

have you checked ur tyre pressure?If they r a bit far below norm then this could cause the bounciness and gives you more grip on the corners but may feel a bit bouncy on corners aswell.

Tyre pressures are spot on. I've just had the valve core changed as it was faulty. But it's fine now. Been checking it constantly.

I've just started thinking some more. Smooth corners were fine out on the open roads. But now that I think about it, me and my mate were going round an industrial estate at the end of last night and on the corners my rear wheel kept skipping and sliding all over the place when it was a bumpy corner. Quite scary. Must have been hopping off the ground a little. This would explain a lot!

I definetely believe something is wrong with it now...

Could be a dodgy wheel bearing. Get the back end off the ground and wiggle the wheel in the swingarm, lift it up and down etc feeling for play.

I have a combination of shit wheel bearing AND shit rear suspension. YEs the back hops about alot. Listen to robby.

The bike probably only has about 5" of movement in the rear suspension anyway.

Rear shocks often can be rebuilt (and the one for my Divvy has been rebuilt and it does not have a remote reservior, cost £95 including a new damper rod). However the cost is not going to be that cheap compared to new twin shocks.

If the rear suspension bounces then it does suggest the damping has gone. However if the bike has adjustable damping then it is probably just that someone has played with it (could just be a kid when you have parked it).

Right I've now noticed there's a leak of (maybe) oil on the garage floor directly underneath where the rear shock is. Is this likely a cause of my problem? How do I fix it?

Most likely the rear shock is wrecked. Either replacement or rebuild time.

You might well find some other Suzukis use the same or very similar rear shock.

The place that rebuilt mine charges from £65 to £95 generally, sometimes more if extra bits are required (damper rod for example), but be aware that it can take a couple of weeks.

The dampening went on the front and back suspension on my old moped when i was 16, boy them pot holes were fun .

Well the new shock arrived so I'll be fitting it this week. Looks like it's in excellent condition. Cosmetically it looks much better than the current one too. £40. Not bad.
