This is often caused by substantial drum wear. Grooves in the drum wear similar grooves into the brake shoes and under heavy braking they join up like pieces of a jigsaw....causing a sudden lock up. Usually only happens in the wet, though I'm not entirely sure why.

Yup, did that on my RXS... ...twice. Laughing Once each side. First time I was overtaking two lanes of cars approaching a set of traffic lights. I braked to what I thought was reasonable level and bang! I was down before I knew it. It was in the wet...

The bike was ok to ride, but I stored it in a mate’s lockup while I sorted out spares. I suspected that the brake shoes were overly worn leading to the pinion locking sideways, so I organised new shoes and even got a newish front wheel. I went to pick up the RXS after a few weeks and rode it back to mine being very cautious with the front brake...

...it began to rain...

... I thought I’ll be ok so long as I don’t have to stop briskly...

...cars in front do an emergency stop...

...bang!... ...bollocks!

However I’ve ridden it in all weather for years since then without another incident. I’m careful not to neglect the brakes anymore and Pirelli City Demon tyres make a world of difference.
