So having read in reviews that the NSR is somewhat lacking in the headlighting department I have to say that I more than agree and am thinking that its getting somewhat hazardars when riding late at night Confused

Thus I'm looking to the BFC in all your wizdom, what can be done to brighten the road ahead? Currently i can barely see what i would consider a resonable stopping distance and the high beam just lights up the sides of the road mostly Sad

The NSR dosnt have great rating but alains document suggests Halogen 35/35W Ba20d socket as the max power (although i thought i read something about melting with halogens at some point Neutral).

I checked the power getting to the battery from the bike a short while ago and it was putting out a healthy 13v so i'm pretty sure the batt is doing okay (although i dont use the starter at the moment as it turns the engine but dosnt fire (although oddly enough it will bump pretty easily....) but has turned a little slower lately (maybe as i am usually using the bike at night?)).

Any thoughts would be much appreciated,

Best regards

Well a little googling and i have found a post somewhere else suggesting a simples mod for the bulb bracket here (or translated here ) and uprated bulbs here.

I am very tempted but have the feeling that my NSR isnt so happy electrically (the battery doesnt get much chance to charge as i have the lights on a lot), what are the chances (As i have a spare engine) of we-wrapping the altenator to give it a touch more juice (with an extra wrap or something?).

Is this likely to have any knock on effects for the regulator for example (although that said it wouldnt be to hard to throw together a heat sink for it due to the way it is mounted heh)?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Best regards

It will be fine adding different bulbs, I've wired a sat nav and 2 strips of LEDs to my little CBR for winter and its fine, failing that you can always bump it Wink

Haha,
I DO bump it... not sure why but the starter will turn the engine over but the engine never fires *shrugs*... so i bump it from the word go most of the time...

That being said i am keen to replace my back bulbs with something LED'y if they are bright enough, that would save some juice, and maybe replace the front indicators? (back are LED but front arnt).

Just ordered some 35w halogens for it...
see if i have any joy...

Damn getting up at 4:30am Sad

beware of the heath if you keep your lights on for a while . if you get trouble with the sockets
you could have fit a HID as you found a way to transform Ba20d in H4

Even riding with the lights on, it will charge the battery.

You have a knackered battery. Get a new one before cocking around with headlights. The knackered battery is causing a higher than normal current drain, meaning less for the headlights.

Clean your bike too, dirty headlights don't work too well.

That is what i initially thought but its a pretty new battery to be honest....
The battery before that was propperly knackered as the regulator went and stopped charging the battery > 2000rpm (99% of the time).

To be honest i think the starter wiring needs to be stripped and cleared (a few days ago the relay would only click and starter wouldnt engage untill i took out the relay and there was lots of crap on the contact surfaces, cleared out both sides and it engaged absoloutly fine), infact it would probly do a lot of good to get most of the connections out and give them a good clean!

Will give that a shot tomorow and see what happens...

Best regards

Ps, if i'm going through all the connectors, may as well check grounds as well but is there anything anyone could suggest that i could put on the connections to prevent corrosion?

Will the H4's use a lot less power?

The NSR has enough problems with power at the moment and if these new bulbs (arrived this morning, installing tomorow morning) are going to hit the batter very hard i may think about going for the H4's.

I was also thinking about converting the rear lights to LED (DIY Very Happy) to save on the wattage? Good idea/bad idea?

Best regards

the HID use 35W and it's a cold light , so no problem with the heath and the lighting power is about 4 times halogen bulbs
look here for example https://www.hidxenonlights.com/h4-hid-bulbs-c-646

Don't bother DIYing the tail lights, just get some LED bulbs, waay less effort. As for headlights, if you really want extra light, just fit HID bulbs. LED lights on the front will do nothing for your ability to see, though they will make you more visible, this is due to LEDs having a high luminous intensity on the front angle, but quite a low luminous output. There are LEDs with a good luminous output, but HID (and probably halogen too) represent a more cost efficient route for putting out lots of light.

Also, make sure the lenses are clean and the lights are correctly aimed, if your lights aren't aimed right then no amount of extra light is going to make a difference.
