Just bought a used Scorpion can off eBay, was listed as 'for road use'.

12 days later it arrived. After fitting i've noticed that the "NOT" has been removed from the can!

Why would someone just remove this bit?? It's not as if legal road use cans come with "FOR ROAD USE" stamped on it!

Could i get away with leaving it as it is? It doesn't seem really loud (about same as a friends legal Scorpion with baffles removed) or would you remove the "FOR ROAD USE" so it's completely missing?? Thanks

Got a dremel so should do.

It's etched right on the back when the tailpipe is...

There isn't a hole either for any baffles, does this make it illegal at all? Worried about riding it now! Shocked

Illegal exhausts are still just as illegal even if you modify the writing to say they are legal, plus you'll be opening yourself up to charges for modifying the exhaust to evade the law. That said, in reality, it should fool most police not that many are likely to care anyway. I'm not even sure if my exhaust is legal or not tbh, was never really bothered enough to check.

I suspect it is a bit less illegal if it doesn't have "not for road use" on it.
As the laws around this area are rather fuzzy I believe - some would suggest anything is illegal, while others all down to discretion, etc.

People are getting wise to baffles, to the point an MOT tester told me my exhaust would have come with a baffle and must have it in to pass, as it had a BS mark.
When I got the exhaust it had BOTH a BS mark and a 'not for road use' on it, but baffles hadn't really been 'invented' yet, so I know it wasn't intended to have one!

If you ride like a tit and being antisocial the police will pull you. If you dont ride late at night much then i would not worry about it. Loud cans save lifes they say. If you are worried look into buying DB killer

Only if they car drivers have their windows open! The noise made by motorbikes doesn't penetrate cars very well at all.

I'd not be too incline to believe the Police with regard to what makes things safer either though, as well all know they claim speed cameras to make the roads safer, when in fact they make people slam on the anchors!

If you want to attract other drivers attention, get an RS125 and remove the can, works a treat!

https://thames-valley-region.mag-uk.org/Pages/exhaust_legal.htm

I have not seen where the exact dB level is listed.
To comply with a limit the test must be carried out with approved and calibrated equipment. The person doing the test must be fully qualified and trained to do the test specific to the vehicle.

I had a loonypipe on a bike I owned a few years back and was concerned about giving the filth an easy target.
I asked the police about testing and they said it is difficult for them to enforce as they would need government approved dept. testing equipment to do a roadside test.
They are not trained to do this either. which ould entail impounding a vehicle for test.
In Falkirk, the council pounced on the local Chav/Ned Park one evening but had DoT test engineers on-tow to check suspect vehicles.
It was rather upsetting for some but entertaining for local residents.

Loud pipes are a nuisance and unneccessary.

I'd disagree. A fairly loud exhaust can be heard pretty easy.

As for the markings.I wouldn't worry. A lot of police don't even know to look for the markings and the ones that do will know an illegaly loud exhaust just from hearing it so they'll still do you if they are really set on it.

Oh dear, i went out to polish it and it appears to have rubbed off!

My friend has a similar can and his is legal, and louder!

I don't drive it through town like a c0ck so what the hell, some cars out there are worse.

Will the MPG be affected with a can on? (if riding the same as before)

Thanks

Yes, you will probably open it up more when you don't need to, to hear it rumbling/screaming etc Smile.
Otherwise, shouldn't do noticeably.

You can get fake plates which go over the 'Not for road use' sign.

Yeh seem them, mine is just under the tail pipe though.

What would happen at MOT time? I heard they don't do emissions on bikes, is this right? It's not really loud on idle...

If you modify a non legal exhaust the bike could fail an MoT Test.
Could fail.
But some testers know the score and know if you pass with a road legal on you would go home and put your silly fcuker one on anyway..

I have an E stamped Fuel can. Which is funny, because the baffles are removeable... So it now has no baffles, but still retains it's E mark.

But it must be road legal officer! Razz

is there a visible difference in a road legal can and a race can?

do they require bsau stamps by law?

how come my scorpion can doesn't have a hole drilled for removable baffles?

Confused

STOP!!!!

The thing you refer to is called an exhaust muffler/silencer.

A can is a device soup and beans come in.

A Can-Can is a French dance for tarts.

A Race Can and a road legal can can be one and the same depending on who, what and where you race.

Confusing?

If it has NOT FOR ROAD USE stamped into it then it is not for road use. Illegal.

Some 'Race Cans' Are suitable for road use legal but some aren't.

This is a no brainer read wot it sez on the device.

Thumbs Up

I know that if a 'silencer' is stamped NOT FOR ROAD USE then it is illegal to use it on a public road.

However, if it no longer states NOT FOR ROAD USE can you still be done for using it on a public road? Could you be done for something that isn't in writing on the 'silencer'? (and yes i know about the 'perverting the.....')

Would it be deemed as NOT FOR ROAD USE if it was an aftermarket can with no option for a baffle?

How could they prove this was an illegal 'silencer'? THIS WAS MY QUESTION! DOES IT NEED TO BE MARKED BSAU TO BE ROAD LEGAL?

the cops don't have the discretion to say whether it too loud - but of they think it is they will ask you to get it MoT again.

Think about all the Harley Davidsons about, they bloody explicitly loud!

The Harley that set off from the pub where I was sat on Saturday, was seriously loud...we all had to stop talking, until the rider has gone off down the road... Shocked

Yeh, they are bloody loud.

Mine isn't really that loud though, a friend has a road legal Scorpion and when he takes his baffles out it's a lot louder than mine.

Would a race can not have the option for a baffle tho? Thinking of drilling a hole just so it looks that bit more legal lol

If it says "NOT FOR ROAD USE" on it, it shold definately fail an MOT.

If it doesn't say this on it, then the tester has to decide if, in his oppinion, it is any louder than a standard exhaust on a similar type of motorcycle. If it is, it should fail.

This reg is why my mate got away with a set of stubby, unbaffled headers running to just behind the footpegs on his homebuilt diesel V-twin. Tester said that as far as he knows, it's the only bike like that anywhere so whatever is on it is the "standard" exhaust.

I did like the laser sports exhaust I got for my KLE500. They obviously know their customers. The "NOT FOR ROAD USE" was stamped round the collar of the end-can where it joins the exhaust system. Right where you put the clamp Thumbs Up
