Question for FireBlade 929 owners

A long time ago I bought a Renntec Sports Rack for my 954 for touring, but when I tried to fit it the bolt holes didn’t line up. It’s so far out it can’t just be bent or poorly manufactured, so I guessed that if the subframe on the 929 was different to the 954, maybe I’d been sent a 929 rack by accident.

Caveat: It’s always possible that I’m just being a numpty here. Wouldn’t be the first time. The front section of the rack bolts to the bungee bobbins at the front of the pillion seat and the rear tabs are shaped to curve over the lip of the tail plastics and bolt onto the subframe.

Anyway looking at the pictures you can see that with the rack in approximately the right position the rear lugs are several centimetres in front of the bolts that are meant to secure them.

Does the underseat area of the 929 look different to the 954? Any chance anyone could post a picture or measurements? With my 954 up for sale I want to get rid of the rack, but I’m not going to sell it as a 954 piece if it doesn’t fit. If it transpires to be a 929 rack then at least I can sell it on accurately. my 929 came with a renntec grabrail (not that I use it though because I run with a solo seat cowl at the back meaning that the pillion seat is junked in the shed). I was bemused when I came to fitting it on my first pillion ride but soon established that it only has 2 attachment points by the aforementioned bungee bobbins. The lips of the rail in that picture seat nicely into the plastics and you DON'T need to bolt it into your subframe... because you cant! There's nowhere to bolt it onto anyway!

The front DOES bolt onto the front bungee point by the hinge. AFAIK it's left to hinge freely. The pillion seat, when locked, effectively secures it down. It doesn't bolt down to anything. NO matter how much your pillion is tugging on the grab rail, their weight will keep the seat firmly engaged and therefore the grabrail will not be yanked out.

Think of it as a lever being reacted by the force of the pillion. If you have luggage, the weight will act downwards therefore pushing the rail downwards towards the bike.

I'm sorry I won't be much help with regards to posting images of my subframe because I've gaffa taped EVERYTHING down there! The bike came with an aftermarket undertray meaning that I had to reinforce everything with gaffa tape to stop bits falling out of the sides!

There's nothing wrong with the rail mate! Come to think of it, I'm going to sell mine - I never used it, it came free with the bike, and I'd much prefer reach-arounds

Cheers Titot. I can see how that would work and it explains why the fitting kit came with patches of tough, sticky backed foam. I assumed it was for protecting the bodywork where the tabs folded over it, not actually for the tabs to sit on. No wonder they list the max luggage weight at 2kg or something.

Still think it’s a nuts and slightly lazy design when there’s clearly a couple of bolts they could have used as mounting points in the back.
