Where can I pick up a rebuilt XR400 engine from?

Are they hard to aquire?
Just wondering weather or not to spend £600 on a rebuilt which I have been quoted or see if I can pick one up cheaper.

Well no ones going to rebuild an engine and then sell it, so you'd be looking at getting a second hand one off ebay. So unless yours is really far gone it will probably be cheaper to rebuild that one yourself. Big singles are a really nice to work on, the hardest part is probably getting the engine back in the frame! Smile

Yeah cheers, it does look a bit tricky. Did a KMX rebuild not too long ego and had to seperate the swinging arm from the frame in order to get the engine in and out. I guess this one will be a lot more difficult being a heavier bike. Not looking forward to it to be honest.

Cams a bit worn, could be a rocker and the bearings let you know they exist when the oil gets hot and thin.

Will be ok for a year or too but I would rarther get it done while I can.

The swingarm pivot bolt is notoriously difficult to get out on these. Water gets in and the corrosion seizes it in place. Have a go at getting yours out before considering anything.

Cheers, I will do that.
Hammer taps and dies at the ready as usual for a bodge it and legit like me.
I have been quoted £600 for a full rebuld by a mechanic.
Got to concider weather or not it is worth saving myself £200 by doing it my self. Parts will be at least £400 I guess.

I soaked mine with Plus Gas for days and days and spent ages hitting it with a big hammer and it never moved a mm. There have been reports of people putting the whole thing in a hydraulic press and the frame bending before the pivot bolt moves.

last 1 i did i used oxy cetlin and it was still a bugger to get out but on a plus side if the engine was any easier to rebuild it would have been a 2 stroke..lol

Oh dear!
Well I think i'll give it to the mechanic then, it's 10 years old a bit rusty bellow. Exaust needs welding too. I think this may be an indication.

i completely rebuilt a xr250 not so long ago,
cost me about $400 nzd (all parts out of the uk delivered to nz)
exceedingly easy engine to work on,
i got all my parts from https://www.patternbikeparts.com
which were far and away the cheapest place i have managed to get parts.
