my non abs pans would get about 50mpg when ridden fairly steadily but no matter how nice i am to abs version it won't go over 40mpg, having been ignoring the obvious it seems to be the rear wheel size that causes it.
On the non abs it has 17 front, 18 rear and the abs 17's front and rear, i assume to make it easy to calibrate the abs/tcs.

As my rear sensor is screwed and i'm not paying Mr Honda £250 for a new one i'm going to fit a 18" wheel into it tomorrow and see what the mpg does.

Anyone else tried this?

well changing to a larger tyre would in effect be the same as changing to a smaller rear sprocket, (eg every turn gets you further)
so at any given set of revs you'll be going a bit faster, (or at any speed the revs will be a bit lower)
that would change the mpg,

i have had to do the same thing to my delica van, standard tyres are
225x75x15 but i run 275/70x16s and thats given me an extra 10kmh at the same revs,

so a 160/70x17 to 160/70x18 will give you 63mph when you were going 60mph before

https://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php

you could of course just put on a 160/80/17 to the 17"rim
or a 170/70x17

Well, as it turns out, I'm a retard Embarassed

The rear tyre on abs and non abs are the same.

It's the front that is different.

So, anyone any idea why they are so different in mpg?

It'll be the extra load on the generator to power the computer and the servo's that work all the ABS electronics..... Oh and the extra weight of it all being lugged about... Very Happy

Theres a lot of reasons why different bikes, even identical ones can give very different fuel consumptions.

Rider restraint is probably the biggest, followed by engine & general bike service condition, including tyre pressures.

On the newer bike, with ABS speed sensing equipment, I'd hazard a guess at the speedo & oddometer being a tad less optimistic, that can account for a fair few % in the recorded miles, add to that the accuracy of measuring the fuel in etc, anything within 10 - 20% can be accounted for purely on 'instrument & experimental accuracy'.

More than likely though, with the pan being of shall we say rather 'old' design.... how long they been about now? Seem to remember one of the instructors when I did my Part one, back in..... err.... 1987! turning up on one of the first demonstrators into the country.... (Was a police Rider, had it for evaluation!) that they have resorted to the 'cheats' to squeeze that last bit out of them to get them through emmissions testing. Possible that they have remapped or jetted fueling and or ignition to make them run REALLY weak at the test speed..... puts a really big flat spot in the power, so riding you naturally avid it, riding an mph or so either side, and that can knock the fueling off the sweet-spot and up the mpg. Especially if that flat spot is JUST where you least want it in top, so you are riding a gear down and reving out to avoid it.

Basically, I dont 'KNOW', but ther are hundreds of possible reasons!

There is definitely a big difference between the abs / non abs.

Not jetting, when i first got mine i put the carbs off my non abs 50mpg bike on my abs machine and made no difference at all.

There are a group of us all couriers using the st1100's and all find the 10mpg difference.

Mine has no fuses in the abs/tcs system and a the weight of a few extra pipes and pumps can't make that much difference to mpg when non abs will still do 50 mpg loaded like a mule

Can't be the diff either, the abs one ate itself few weeks back and i used the internal parts from non abs to rebuild it and never changed the mpg.

Not being anal or overly tight arse about it, because using a tank full or 2 every day means the abs bike is costing me a a couple of grand extra in fuel a year.

Could it be an exhaust catalyst or emissions tuning thing
Don't see how the ABS can make that much difference
A lot of car mpg figures got worse when catalysts came in

The exhaust system, carbs and tall screen were all transplanted from my last ST11

so its not the carbs, exhaust, or abs, did they do something to the cams when they changed the models??
may be the ignition timing has changed, do you still have your old cdi?
may be try changing that over,

failing that go for the taller tyre
or before that add another 5-10 psi to your tyres,
