Long Way Round/Down & Race to Dakhar, your thoughts?

So I just watched Race to Dakhar, and to be honest I was pretty dissapointed.

The first 2 hours was him yapping and planning, which I'd seen in the Long Ways. Charley stops riding in the 4/5th episode and the rest is his 2 mates riding round swearing, and a whole lot of footage of Charley at the pit-stops.

To top off the boring shite the whole time Charley is sulking and moaning none stop. Oh and saw hardly any crashes, and very little footage of them riding the bikes!

The Long way Round has to be the best one for me as it was all new to them at the time.

I don't think I've seen a good bike related program on TV. LWR was aimed, understandably, at the mainstream audience and certainly didn't hurt BMWs sales figures.

Nick Sanders could do well but its just too rushed and random.

I'd like to see a small group of average people on their own bikes do something similar without all the support vehicles and sponsorship.

I'd much rather sit and watch Race To Dakar than LWD. I thought that with RTD they managed to make the best of a bad situation. Simon Pavey was genuinely interesting, and the other guy's plight (Matt?) as a 'fallen rider' was really interesting.

Charley's acting skills were tested to the limit with the whole "OMG Matt has stopped!!" nonsense, but considering how well he was doing when he broke his wrists I don't think he did all that badly. He did better than I can do, and people were going to dis him unless he finished, so I think he did very well indeed.

LWD was dire. Considering they had a two and a half month journey and the best footage they could come up with was Ewan moaning, I think they did a particularly poor job.

I actually really enjoyed By Any Means and By Any Means 2. Better than all of them except LWR IMO.

Too commercial 'Eastenders' style, made for TV drama - while an interesting travelling/motorbiking real life story seems to be second place or worse - possibly because it wasn't that interesting with all the support etc?
This sort of trip shouldn't need extra dramatisation really.

Just finished watching the LWR again and its a really good story.
Got the books and they are good too.
Watching the LWD and its ok, still entertaining tv (esp as you get to see a bit of Ewan's willy!).

Must watch Race To Dakar and by any means at some point..

I enjoyed Long Way Round all those years ago, but there were large aspects of boorman that really got on my tits. Even then.

Boorman;

Sulking and ripping the KTM poster off the wall, when they don't agree to give them free bikes.

When he is about to set off and nearly drops his bike, then gives it the whole "thank-yooou, jeeez" type of thing when people help him not drop it. As if they were supposed to guess he was liable to turn into a completely inept retard at any moment and drop the bike.

When he has a go at his manager/director bloke for flapping too much "calm down russ, just caaaaalmmm doooooowwwwwnnnn". I thought the guy did well not to clock him.

He also spat out the food he was given, which I thought was pretty fucking rude. Ok, it was testicles or something, but you could politely decline it beforehand instead of being a disgusting pig in somebodys home.

He is just an overprivileged posh twat, with a lispy voice, who has a real diva streak.

After long way round, he is universally accepted as some kind of messiah on two wheels.

Just gets on my tits.

I did register there once, but couldn't get on with it. Far too many forums.

If he was considered a fraud by so many, he wouldn't have been offered the multiple magazine columns, newspaper articles and subsequent series'.

Really enjoyed Long Way round. So much so that everytime I watch it I just wanna go on a long trip. I didn't enjoy Long Way Down as much probably because it was just all desert and not much more. And yeah, Charley did a fair bit of moaning which got annoying after a bit but didn't make me want to turn it off. Ewan was awesome though, class bloke, proper down to earth.

Haven't seen the Race To Dakar, I'll have to give that a watch.
