Yes you can do that if you want. However remember that most people don't keep bikes for more than two years anyway. You'd be better of with a 600cc roadster e.g. Hornet, Bandit, Fazer etc. as a first bike rather than a sports bike (Which I presume is what you're after Smile)

To be honest, I wouldn't bother getting a big bike at 17 and restricting it, you'd be too tempted to remove the restriction and then your running into all sorts of problems if you get pulled.

Theres no point getting a big bike restricted, may as well just get a 125. do your 2 years and then take your big bike DAS.

It's up to you. Just bear in mind that you're quite likely to drop your first bike bike, and plastics are very expensive to replace. Smile

Dont buy a bike with plastics mate - I've dropped my GS 500 twice already just trying to get it onto the center stand, although i was used to a 50cc moped for a year and a bit previously.

A complete estimate, but 17 y/o with no previous no-claims bonus on a 600cc sports bike would be looking at £1200+ Third party only???

£800-1k TPFT give or take a bit, depending on what 600cc bike and things like what type of area you live in.

Get some quotes from say ebikeinsurance.co.uk to get an idea of what insurance prices you'd be looking at.

Oh yeah, it's 33bhp rather than 32. Wink

Don't even think the insurers take restriction into account so in their view you are riding a 600.

They don't. Been there, done that. So you get insured on the bike with an engine mod basically.
I would say a 400 would be better as a first bike if your going to restrict it.
My ER5 (first bike) at 18 cost me about £800 no NCB TPFT garaged at home. Depends on excess and value as well.

There will be quite a difference in the insurance between a commuter 500 and a sports 600.

ER-5 is a commuter, guess my NCB makes a BIG difference.

Let me clear this up for you a little.

At the age of 17 you can take your motorbike test. Once you have passed, you can buy any CC motorbike you like, but it must be restricted to 33hp by law for two years from the day you passed your test.

The only way to have a full hp bike is to wait until you are 21, at which point you can do your DAS (Direct Access)

Bike wise, a good starter is a GPZ500S - preferable a D model.

Its a good solid bike, it has a decent engine, decent handling, and is very unforgiving. It will teach you to ride much more smoothly and fluently than any sports 600.

Restricted it will beat both a restricted r6 and a restricted sv650 to 100mph. fact.

Drop it and you might brake a lever and scratch the engine casing. mine fell over once and it did no damage whatsoever.

I love mine and am coming to the end of my restriction. i absolutely love it.

you shouldn't get a 600cc sports bike, cause restricted, your pretty much cutting its balls off! so you may as well get a smaller bike that's cheaper to insure, but will go just as fast as a sports bike restricted.

Yeah ... there's no restriction on power-to-weight now is there.
So if you're really after speed you could have a 250 2-stroke supermoto or something, still putting out 33hp but with less inertia to deal with. Or insane insurance bills.
(jeez, took me til I was 22 to afford cover on a 1-litre hatchback with bare more power and a LOT more weight)

Lower insurance because less likelihood you're going to illegally derestrict it and spazz it into the middle of a school run. More rugged and less expensive to fix if you do stack it. Can make like a hooligan over speed bumps. Less low rev torque (one of the hidden virtues of a big engine, which restriction WON'T affect anywhere near as much as the top end power) so you won't have it breaking away from you unexpectedly close to idle... and a need to keep putting oil in, which will teach discipline towards maintenance schedules.

Serve the time, pay the dues, reap the rewards...

There is a power to weight restriction, it's 0.16 kW/kg. I just double checked this on the DVLA website
https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/RidingMotorcyclesAndMopeds/DG_4022568

This is what makes the Aprilia RS125 such a useless bike! It's 33bhp 125, that is restricted by most to 14bhp for L plates, but if you do a test other than DAS, then you still can't ride it at 33bhp as I believe the power to weight ratio is above 0.16kW/kg iirc.

The only time you could use it on the road at 33bhp, is if you had an unrestricted license, at which point you may as well get a 100bhp+ 600cc, or if you're going to destrict it to 33bhp with a restricted license, the penalty of being caught is the same as with an unrestricted 600.

Rats... and we were going so well.

However that's still 16kW for a 100kg bike. Which is 21hp for a fairly light machine. Or the equivalent of 213hp/tonne for a car (though a car with 4 occupants and luggage, once you're sat on the bike too). Not exactly a slouch.

Or in other words, you hit the 25kW / 33hp limit at 156kg, which isn't much more than my CG's kerb weight. And, to tarnish my halo Wink I wonder how many cops are going to bother weighing your bike and putting it on a dyno if you've got a certificate and can show the restrictor is still in place and working?

Is that for the dry weight btw, or with fluids etc? You could perhaps have it weighed down with a few bolt-on accessories and have the full power ... no greater acceleration, and not quite as dynamic handling/braking, but slightly less affected by what you had for lunch (or a pillion) and with a better top speed.
