Gluing a carbon airbox - any experience ?

Hey - got this carbon airbox for my zxr but I need to fix the snout to the top of the airbox with an airtight seal (it seems like it was previously glued)

Anyone have any ideas on how I can go about this? Was thinking araldite but i'm not sure this is a good idea.

I've done a mockup of how it's supposed to be - getting the top and bottom half together is no prob it already has lugs and such to facilitate this - it's just gluing the snout onto the lid that's the problem.

I don't want to ruin it - they don't come up often nowadays for the zxr.

How much loading does it have to take? Most epoxy resins should hold it together but I'd want to try silicon first, it fills gaps well and is easy to remove if it goes wrong.

It's a good question - no direct loading only what wind resistance the front facing tube/snout/snorkel may encounter at speed as it pokes out just above the rad for 'ram air'

An epoxy would be the preferred permanent choice. If you want to get it apart again I'd try the sealant first.

I just repaired a crack in the carbon fibre hugger on my VFR using a hot glue gun. Glued the split parts together then placed a bead of glue over the top of the split.

It's done a very good job. A bit more flexible than epoxy and sets in a couple of minutes.

Do you want it permanent or temporary?

Epoxy will destroy the box if you try and open it again, I'd try some silicone sealant, or even some small screws/bolts+nuts around the edge if there is a decent overlap.

Think you mis-understand. The lid and bottom half already have bolts to get it together it's just getting the front intake scoop onto the lid securely.

having said that I do need it permanent as it was permanent once and someone dismantled it to post it. (looks like it was previously epoxied.

Ah, I did indeed.

In which case I'd try the hot glue gun that Stinkwheel suggested. It will be strong and flexible but if you really needed to then a bit of heat would melt the glue so you can dismantle it Thumbs Up .

Dow Cornings or 3M High temperature silicone sealant. Much tougher adhesive than the stuff used or bathrooms/aquariums.
Try until you are happy with fit and function then Permanentize it with some fibreglass resin. Carbon Fibre and glasfibre probably use the same resin bond. But don't "" me on it.
