Soundproofing material?

I'm looking for some cheap (i.e. student-pocket-friendly) material that i can stick/staple/otherwise attach to the bottom and/or sides of my door to reduce the noise that goes through it (large-ish gap at the bottom, at the very least) - i suppose it would also reduce the draught. Any recommendations?

No idea on soundproofing myself, but as it's a rented property i can't be doing anything much else without "damaging" the property (the landlord isn't too nice).

Is it for draft exclusion or soundproofing? If it's drafts, foam tape on the frame, and one of those brush things down the bottom.

If you want to spend money on it then you could buy a lintel, they're about £15 from b&q and replace the grip strip with an L shaped bit of metal & some foam to but against the base of the door.

Cheap way to get the same effect would be to get a strip (or 2) of carpet & fix it to the bottom to close the gap.

If the door is hollow fill it with expanding foam.

Sound travels best through air - make it as air tight as possible to reduce the noise.

Sound also loses energy (as heat) when it travels through a solid object eg.

air - door - air

Increasing the mass of the object increases the amount of energy in the sound lost to heat as it transmits through the object and so reduces the amount you hears.

Spare pillow should block it, but won't necessarily soundproof it.

When I was a student, in one particular place, I nailed old curtains into the beam and created a den around my bed...it didn't half keep it warm in there!

doors are a weak point in a room when you want to kill sound
you can cover the door in egg box trays as the angles bounces / absorbs sound
as to the gap heavy carpet felt works well or some type of fiber board

Rockwool is brilliant for insulation and soundproofing but would need to be covered.

Bass is your enemy. Higher frequencies die off pretty easily with intervening walls and objects. Thump thump bass travels very well through solids and drives neighbours up the wall.

Turn your bass right down or buy a good pair of headphones

I only know of the range of car products they do (dynamat sound proofing for doors etc) but it seems they do a range of products for the home so have a ganders. Not sure how much it is though (it's around £40 for the stuff used in cars)
