How Far / Long is your bike Commute?

I'm just trying to figure out how far is realistically doable through the winter by bike. I'd appreciate knowing what people do.
I'll have to do it 5 days a week.

If the snow comes down, the train will be an option.

40 miles by either push bike or motorbike. A little bit more on push bike as I cant take the straight forward route by cycle.

I didn't know whether you meant total miles covered daily or distance covered to get to work...

Anyhoo, mine is a little over 35 miles each way, into the centre of that London place. A mix of dual carriageway, motorway and city streets. Takes an average of 50 minutes door to door depending on conditions and traffic etc but can be done in 35 minutes... ahem.

When commuting through winter there are so many variables as to whether it is 'worth it'. (Your route, your bike, your biking gear etc) Then you have to be slightly pragmatic in your approach to the whole thing. Be careful though because regular commuters often come down with an illness that makes them plaster their bikes in reflective stickers and talk incessantly of mpg...

over last winter, my car died so I was commuting 32 miles each way 6 days a week on a cb250 nighthawk, and then on a restricted monster 600.

Even in the snow on Detling hill, it wasn't too bad. Just be smooth smooth smooth, and make sure you have gear that is as waterproof as it can be. If the weather is so bad I wouldn't ride, it's unlikely that trains would also be running great.

However, when I do have a car I will use that. I don't dislike riding around in the wet and cold and dark, it's just easier to be able to jump into car and not worry about getting cold or wet. It's more fun to ride in the snow than drive though.

The main reason I've worked where I work for the last 15 years, is the 4-5 mile commute. My neighbour drives 50 miles to work and sets off at a rediculously early time, I leave to work after my kids have set off to go school.

Totally depends what bike you have and what the roads are like.

Distance isn't so much of an issue as time. Anything over 45mins each way is going to get annoying, over an hour each way is tough. In winter you are going to need some bloody good kit to stay warm riding for an hour, especially if it's at motorway speed.

The only time distance comes into play (for me, anyway) is if you have a small tank range on your bike. It's really annoying having to fill up every day.

Get a Deauville, good textiles and a electric heated waistcoat and a motorway journey of 60+ miles each way will be comfortable.

Try doing the same thing on a RS125, you'll wish you were dead after a month

When I was commuting I could go either the motorway or through town. It was only slightly quicker through town, despite it being a third of the distance. However I did prefer going through town generally.

Mine is exactly 50 miles a day and i'm going to have to do it what ever the weather as we have got rid of the second car.

Train is no where near work and bus's are crap around telford it would probably take me double my normal journey time which is currently about 50mins each way (25miles)

If it was so bad that i couldn't take the bike, me taking the car means the missus would have to walk to work and i'm not that cruel so its going to have to get pretty bad before i give in.

Saying that i've never ridden thought the winter before and don't know how bad it can get.

So far through the towns is OK its when im out into the sticks (B4176 from swindon to telford) at speed i'm starting to feel a bit cold, my current setup which is:

Work shirt, tie and trousers
Textile trousers and jacket (both lined)
Cheap winter gloves

Next i will probably add a long sleeve jumper over my work shirt and i'm thinking about getting some new gloves possible the ones mentioned in the cheap winter gloves thread.

100 miles round trip each day for the last 14 years. To be honest I'm a bit sick of it now, but I love my job and I love where I live.

It takes me 45 minutes in and about an hour to get home. Electric vest and gloves saved me from losing bodily parts for the worst weeks of the year. The gloves died 18 months ago and I switched to those two fingered gloves, nearly as good. The vest lives on, best bit of bike kit I ever ever bought.

Puts you off riding for pleasure at the weekends.

1.7 miles on country roads.

It takes longer to move the car, get the bike out of the garage, move the car back, start it up, get geared up and climb on board than it takes to jump in the car and drive to work.

13 miles a day through town and dual carriageway. Do this for 6-7 days a week depending on shifts etc.

I must be becoming one of those 'regular commuters' I've been seeking to get more lights and reflective bits for winter

8 miles one way, 95% through town and a little bit of NSL. Should take 20 mins with no-one on the road. Takes 30mins on the bike but takes about an hour in the car (which very rarely gets used)

Two years ago used to be 22 miles each way, through country roads to the village I used to work in. Was 'interesting' in the winter.

Now its about 2 miles to uni when I can be bothered to go in. Happy days.

On the way back i usually take a different/longer more exciting route just because i can

Proabably wont ride on ice though, thats where i draw the line! Dont mind the wind and rain as long as my waterproofs are actually waterproof!

Just thought, i do on average 150 miles per week (Sometimes more) So that means i do 90 miles a week just for fun. Adds up quicker than you think

Straight road so my tyres are squaring up :s I also have chickien strips because the previous owner didn't take it down and I don't go out enough to find corners.

20 miles there and back, mainly riding through Villages and then over the moors on the A666. I try to ride for as long as its safte to do so through winter. But the A666 is very exposed in winter and is a no go when its snows.
