I am buying a bike tomorrow all going well, but i have insurance just now on my current 125, howevever the insurance will be very little change on what i am looking at but will not know what I am going to get until after 3 on Saturday when my insurance company is closed.

So what do i do get insurance online through another company or is there any other option ie insuring myself on any bike or a day insurance or somthing?

Give your insurance company a call and see if you can sort out some kind of 'any bike 3rd party' deal. Might cost you a couple of quids but shouldn't be a big problem.

most companies can set up insurance switch over times, give em a call and tell them what time your swapping bikes and you'll be fine. it will just switch over. some insurance companies will give you insurance on both for that one day of switch over. enjoy your new bike buddy Thumbs Up

If he doesn't know what bike he's getting he won't have the REG etc.
How will be be insured then if he can't phone his insurance company because they're closed by the time he gets a bike?

Not sure how the "any bike 3'rd party" thing works.
Now i'm sure you can ride ANY bike even if that bike has no insurance on it because you're covered under your own bike policy.
However after watching numerous shows on TV about coppers and hearing stories from friends etc i will assume that if stopped they will impound the bike and charge you to get it back even if it turns out you was covered to ride it.

If you do go down that route i would make sure to phone around and ask what how it works in case you get pulled for having no insurance.

Maybe someone else has some info about it?

Other than that you can look into 1day insurance. Will probably cost about £30 but the excess will be high (£1000'ish). Don't crash Razz

Any 3rd party clauses usually require the vehicle to be covered by someone elses policy also, in it's own right.

Ok so for next time someone is wondering this.
I got pulled today taking one of my dad in law's bikes for MoT.
Bike was flagged for no insurance. I told them i was covered to ride any bike from my own bike insurance.
They checked my bike and as i was covered they let me go with a "cheers".
The bike i was on has no mot. no tax and no insurance on it.

So it turns out that if you're covered to ride any bike you can in fact ride bikes with no insurance on them.

Thumbs Up

I do not believe that is the case with the "covered to ride other bikes". In every single policy I have read, the conditions have been that the bike has to have it's own insurance policy on it.

Otherwise you could buy a hayabusa and ride around on it under your cg125 + any bike insurance policy.

I think they police that stopped you were wrong. Either that or they understand that you have insurance on your own bike and decide to give people who have the ride any bike thing a break because the owner should have insured it.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works here, but it depends on how nice the guy pulling you over is or how knowledgeable they may be of the laws. Think you got lucky there. My dad got done a couple of years back for driving another car without insurance even though his own FC policy covered other vehicle 3rd party. The car had tax and Mot but no insurance so got flagged and seized. At the time I asked about this on here in another section and a forum member (johnnygsxr? doesnt come on here anymore but is a copper) confirmed that the vehicle driven needs to be insured itself, and not also that but if it wasn't the owner who gave permission to drive it is also liable to prosecution. Can't remember off the top of my head but theres some act or another covering it that was posted in that thread to back it up.

It depends what your policy says. My current bike policy (bennetts) as well as all my bike policies have required the other vehicle to be owned & insured by someone else (other than a spouse in some cases)

Indeed - check the wording of your policy carefully.

All say that it must be owned by someone else I'm pretty sure.

Look up "use, cause and permit" for allowing someone to use your vehicle knowing that they are not insured to drive it.

It's basically to stop a person buying two vehicles, insuring one and driving the other. Unless you have something like a trade policy then both vehicles need to be insured.
