Posted: 20:28 - 07 Oct 2010 Post subject: How to pull up at home.... Spot the difference |
 |
|
Method 1
Approach slowly in first gear.
Pull onto pavement
Clutch in / Brake
foot, or feet down.
Backpeddle bike onto drive, (I tend to use the slope of the pavement to swing the front round and push my bike back onto the drive)
How I did it today
Approach slowly in first gear
Pull onto pavement
Clutch in / Brake
left foot down, follwed by right foot
Begin to backpeddle bike toward drive
Slip left foot on loose gravel
Try to stop bike falling due to turn and camber of slope combined + no foot to support
fail
Lie bike down in road
Shout profanity at self, bike, neighbour, neighbours dog, stupid gnome-y thing in neighbours garden, birds, cars, and anything else in 50 foot radius
Pick bike up
then resume pushing back onto drive.
apologise to neighbour for use of profanity.
Anybody spot the difference?
Bugger - not too much damage thankfully as i managed to lay it down fairly gently, but had to let go, or end up with it on top of me (which ive done before and not been able to get it off, though not this bike)
Need a new engine cover now scratched not holed thankfully
twat.
Thought I'd share, I can't be the only one to have done this! |

Last time I laid a bike down was my YZF450. Was mid roundabout chasing a few litre bikes.
Was in leathers luckily, knee down, Then just lost the arse end. Slid across the roundabout, overflow from carb pissed onto exhaust, and the bike caught fire.
I didnt come off the bike for some reason, Was still in the riding position once the bike was stationary on it's side on the roundabout.
Just picked the bike up, and rode off up the road with it still on fire. Flames went out, did a few more laps of Ebbsfleet to make sure everything was okay.
Once I stopped, check the bike over, nothing damaged at all, nothing even scratched. |

You picked up a bike that was on fire, then did a few laps on it, while it was initially still on fire, to make sure everything was ticketyboo?

Hoping I'm not the only one who's pulled up looking as cool as ever infront of work mates, keys out and dismounted having completely forgotten about putting the sidestand down Mates thought it was badass, like I'd intentionally got off and thrown my bike to the floor |

Last month.....having passed my test for a whole week I went out for a spin and when I came back my wife and kids were washing the car, I casually cruised in along side the car listening to the throaty burble of the engine at low revs, knocked it into neutral (actually second!), revved it a couple of times for effect..."hey look at me family, I'm on a big bike now" kind of thing, let the revs die down, let our the clutch...immediately stalled the bike, lost balance in the lurch forward, braked and fell sideways into a bush at zero miles an hour!
...damage to bike, nil....damage to me......few scratches across face from twigs (visor was up)...damage to bush..a write off...damage to self esteem......immeasurable!!!!!
...there! I feel better now I have got that out into the open ____________________ Good judgement comes from experience.....experience comes from bad judgement! |

Parking anywhere is a moment when things go wrong.
I remember trying to move the bike a couple of feet in it's garage - somehow it started to go over away from me (and the stand).
Desperately trying to stop it or at least reduce the impact I hung on for grim death - then fell on top of it
No real damage though |

I so feel your pain and embarrasment, as moving my bike about the driveway and garage is a complete trauma for me..........I spend most of the time muttering 'don't drop the bike, don't drop the f**king bike' as it's an accident waiting to happen
The driveway is steepish and uneven rubbish concrete with mud and weeds in the gaps (yes, I do clean it but they come back overnight!). Reversing the bike into the garage, usually in the dark is stressful! Normally I get the front wheel stuck in a millimetre deep hole and then can't push the bike back, so have to get off. Stand down (check three times at least!), knee tucked around crash bung to push bike back out of hole (what hole?). Hop back on bike and push back down the slope, front brake on carefully - nope, well just grab a handful and kangaroo backwards instead, eh?! Next is the best bit - it levels for about a metre in front of the garage door. If I go slowly enough I can get the back wheel on the flat, front still on the slope and me legs a dangling swearing and wobbling mid way! I'm so grateful there are no witnesses to this fiasco!
I feel all heart thumpy and panicky just thinking about it! ____________________ 'The core of a man's spirit comes from new experiences'

I did similar at the weekend.
My car was parked in front of the drive, so I was swinging round the back of it doing about 5 mph - hit some moss on the road and slid at the lowest speed anybody has ever slid before.
Stood up, and laughed my bollocks off.
No damage to bike, but glad nobody saw me |

Went to park up outside my back gate yesterday morning along the side of my house. Cue me overdoing it going round the corner of the house doing a massive 3-4mph! and breaking the stench pipe coming from the upstairs bathroom with my engine bar. Then as I went to get off the bike I hadn't put the sidestand down properly which then made the bike pin me against the wall ____________________ Current bike(s): 2016 Tuono 1100 Factory, 1998 Hornet 600
