Top end metalic taping, only when engine is hot and on idle?

Year 2000 XR400, 6400 genuine miles with history.
Top end metallic taping, only when engine is hot and on idle?
Only taps when I come to a stop at the lights for example and the engine has been running for a while.

I have gone over the valve clearance nearly 10 times and set the exhaust to 1/10th milli and the inlet to 8/100th's. Nice tight fit with the feeler gauges.

I have also noticed that the loosest points of the valves clearances differ and are not in the same place as I rotate the engine anti clockwise, even so I have set them at their loosest points and checked each one through a full rotation of the engine. It's no big deal just annoying.

i'm guessing here,but maybe something to do with the cam chain ?

Yeah could be, It's supposed to be fitted with an auto tention devise but I bet it doesn't work.

Cheers, sounds logical also because even drive chains seem to flap around only at certain speeds too.
I'le check it out at the weekend I think.

Have you tried checking/adjusting the tap-its?

Sometimes it does it intermitently, but as the engine gets warmer the idle speed rises slightly then it does it all the time.
