Lately my little Rieju has been getting increasingly hard to start, oddly not only when its cold, when its cold its starting to get even hard to bump, choke on, everything, she just won't start.

Scenario's where it won't start -
Morning, kept in a garage over night, basically impossible to start, even hard to bump.
Straight after getting off when hot, won't start on starter most of the time, bumps straight away.
When left to get really cold, struggle to start, not as bad as if left over night, will bump. (I mean left outside for an hour or 2 in the evening, going to the cinema etc scenario)

Any idea what this could be? Was alright for about a week after servicing, but now its back to how it was, i'm gonna get the spark plug out soon see if theres any oil on the plug, only other thing im thinking is starter motor. Also getting close to a top end rebuild (Currently at 9700km)

The Bikes a Rieju Nkd 50, as said in the title, 2 stroke Minarelli AM6 engine, basically the same bike as the Rieju RS2 50.

Any help would be brilliant, starting to get annoying.

yeah it'll be rings are on there way, compression down,
you could just pull off the top decoke everything and clean up the rings and make sure they are free, hopefully that'll keep you going untill you get a new rebuild kit,

Is the starter spinning over normally or is it sounding strained? My first instinct is a knackered battery, it's the right time of year for them to give up.

Starter is spinning fine, and battery seems fine, electricals seem absolutely fine (Touch wood, not counting the blown sidelight and and blown speedo backlight Laughing )

Also, is this the kind of thing i need for a top end rebuild?

"seems fine" isn't really an answer. get jump leads across or another battery to rule out the possiblilties of battery failure

it had a new plug at the service, symptoms came back in about 1000km, if that.

I'll get a volt and ampmeter over the terminals, check the readings when the starters running.

can you bump start it easily? If you can its battery related. Starter motors take a hell of alot of juice out these small batteries.

They sound ok but no power for the actual spark at the plug with a worn battery

I'll check the plug and battery tomorrow, and look into the rebuild, been helpful so far.

I know how crap the battery is, considering the headlight gets brighter when i rev the engine Laughing

It should still bump reguardless of the battery condition.

My old TDR had a duff batt for ages, that would still bump easily.

Change the plug first, if no better, im gonna bet on the compression getting low.

you probably don't need the whole cylinder, just a new piston, rings, small end bearing (that kit doesnt have one) and piston pin,

you need this and this and this

Right, checked my spark plug, looked fine to me, got a pic of it. Scrubbed it up with a wire brush and refitted, no change. Put the battery on charge over night, will fit tomorrow morning and see if its made a difference.

Ok so how hard would it be for me to do the top end rebuild? would it be an engine out job? Would give me a chance to paint up the exhaust and decoke it too i guess...
