Textiles are they as safe?

Turned my heated grips on yesterday ... clearly winter is here/on its way!

Anyway, I have always been a 'leathers' man as I have never been convinced textiles will be as good in an off. Mostly as things (armour) looks like it will be able to move about everywhere as they are not as ridged as leather.

What do others think?

Modern textile gear is very good.

Yes the protection moves about a bit. In the event of an off it does protect you, and they survive a trip down the road

It's not as safe no, however it is more practical, especially in the winter, so you're more likely to wear it all of the time.

If you have leather already - surely it's cheaper and more practical, and safer, and better, to buy thermals and a one piece rain suit?

oh yeah - I forgot that spending 18 seconds pulling on thermals, slipping into your leathers as normal and then a further 29 seconds to step into your one piece will be overboard. What was I thinking.

I forgot that wearing stinking textiles (because unless you buy goretex the breathability claims are questionable) soaked and heavy with rain (but you might be dry?) covered in road crud, salt, is fashionable. Drying them out after the rain is a right laugh aswell - oh the joy.



I forgot that the waterproofing wears off and the seams leak, so you have to wash them, and reapply the waterproofing - is not faffing.

I forgot that if you get knocked off and the shoulder armour slips resulting in a severe fracture and snapped ligaments that gives you severe osteoporosis when your 50, is cool.

I forgot all of that.



Leathers. Thermal under layer - buy 2 and wash them intermittently. Rain one piece and all the crud washes off you as you ride. Dry. Warm. Safe. Happy.

Yes, it is all cuffuffal ... that and all that movement, I get to about 1000degC and dripping wet from the inside before I've got outside!!

There was a programme on discovery that did tests. In abrasion leather won, in impact protection the textiles nailed it.

I guess the thickness of textiles protects against blunt trauma in general better than 1.3mm of kangaroo/cowhide even if the armour slips about.

In short, it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

I have textiles, although I need to buy new one's. My current jacket lets water through around my shoulders and elbow. Haven't crashed in them so can't comment on durability.

Crashed in my textiles today, I am not sure exactly what was from the rolling (not sliding) and what was from being run over but the only damage on the jacket and trousers was a small hole in the back of the left knee. Impact etc protection did the job as I only have some small bruising on my lower back/hip. (where there is no protection). The rest of the injury is just from my knee being run over.
I landed from moderately high up and it seems they kept me all pretty safe. The trousers do have this rather pathetic double mesh on the 'non key' areas like the back of the knee which I doubt offers much abrasion resistance at all.

Just found out they have brought out a new jacket called the Ventilator II. Semms really good. Think I may get this as its got all of the features of the Rift and it doesn't look as gay. AND it has a removable waterproof liner so it can be used in the summer hence Ventilator.

Think I may get this. Anyone got it yet? Reviews seem good on the net.
