...we'd done it, would we have got in trouble?

I'll explain.

End of last Sunday, after most folk had left (there was but an occasional trickle of traffic leaving Oulton Park), we meandered back to the car up the track from the Avenue, and left through the gap on the start/finish straight opposite the paddock.

We'd been and done some bits of shopping and had something to eat after the last race 'cos we didn't want to get caught in all that mad traffic, and there was barely a car left where we'd parked (about 30 yards from the track opposite the pits) so we'd got a nice easy run away from the track. So as we're walking to the car, the suggestion gets raised that there's hardly anyone here (apart from folk getting drunk and stupid with it being the end of the season), maybe we can just drive through that big gap and do a circuit. So we all stop, look at the car, the gap and the track. Back to the gap and the car.

Car, gap, track, gap, car, gap, track. Oh what a temptation. In the end, I didn't have the bollocks, there were still a few folk knocking about (campers etc) and crossing the track here and there, and although I would've taken it very steady, it was the safety of others that made me decide not to have a lap.

So my question is, was I right? Should I have grown some cojones and done the lap? And if I had, would I have received an almighty bollocking and been banned from Oulton for the rest of eternity?

There's something immensely satisfying about dicking around on golf courses - i think it's probably something to do with golf being the preserve of the wealthy (and wankers).

In my teenage years, whenever we visited a certain public house the night was not complete without the post-pub walk home across the golf course of a local stately home.

Standard fare was javelin contests with the flags, we came across some unsecured golf buggies once and raced them. Unfortunately, it can be quite difficult to spot the bunkers at night, so the buggies ended up totalled, on their sides in a bunker.

My most inspired trick was the time i passed an especially fine stool into the hole on the 18th. I imagined the golfer the next day, sinking his winning putt on the final hole, reaching in to pluck out his ball to hold aloft in triumph......only to have his triumph marred by having poo-fingers.

Anyone who can reach your advanced age without a few regrets hasn't really lived IMHO.

Thought i'd update this thread:

Went to a funeral yesterday, the deceased was a very keen golfer, so the wake was held at his golf club - which just happened to be the one we used for our post-pub Olympics.

As we walked up to the clubhouse, one of the original 'athletes' turned to me and said "you know, i have very different memories of coming to this golf course" he nodded towards a couple of parked up golf buggies "Reckon they'd mind us taking them for a spin, just for old times sake?"

I chuckled and replied "yeah, i'm sure i can remember where the 18th hole is"

Our resulting giggle-fit brought some disapproving looks from the other assembled mourners.
