 |

Newbee on here, just sold my 2000 R6 and got a 98 R1 for cheap money off my brother-in-law because it has the usual "jumping out of second gear" problem, Ive stripped it for the winter now and found the shift fork thats bent and the damaged dogs on 2nd and 6th but im struggling to get hold of the parts, i know the part numbers have changed of all 3 to newer "improved" parts but im unsure where to get these from at the best price? any help would be greatly appreciated! ____________________ SICK OF SPENDING MONEY!

I love these bikes, do you have more pictures of the r1 as it was being dismantled? would love to see that, also what are we looking at in you picture of the gearbox, nothing appears broken. Would love an update please!!! Out of curiosity how much are yamaha asking for the shift fork, 2nd and 6th, sometimes the dealers are the cheapest but those parts would be bloody expensive. Silverlake would be a good bet provided they have a r1 and that the engine is low miles / intact. Good luck with this fella.

To be fair the old part numbers you have should just forward to the new part numbers on their system, so any Yamaha dealer would be able to give you the new numbers. ____________________ My Flickr |

 |
|
Hi all, fitted my new gearbox parts yesterday and rebuilt the bike, cost me £462 for bits from K2 In stoke on trent but wass well worth it, got new 2nd gear, new 6th gear, all 3 shift forks and a new shift cam. bike ran perfect, took it for a quick spin around the industrial estate and all gears were purrrfect. came to work today to fit rest of fairings etc and had it ticking over for about 5 mins when BANG! it just stopped running, tried the starter and engine was locked, anyways its dropped at least 4 inlet valves! thought id get a bit of use out of it before winter but hey, you cant have everything can you? so engine back out and more ££££££'s on parts. i thought having a bike was meant to be fun???? hahaha, ____________________ SICK OF SPENDING MONEY!

Yeah, could of had a second hand engine for £400 but wouldnt have a guarantee that the gearbox would have been in good nick as ive read around and a lot of people have the 2nd gear problem on r1's, anyways, looks like im gonna have to get a second hand head aswell now because its crushed all 12 inlet valves! by the looks of things the inlet cam has seized for a moment allowing the timing to jump a few teeth, the cam is stiff to turn in the camshaft caps when the cam is removed from the engine, the exhaust cam will roll smooth as silk in the caps but the inlet cam is very stiff, seems like oil starvation, oh and there is a lovely black/grey oil around the cam where it has been wearing.
So ive got a great gearbox but nothing to power it with now!!!
Looks like im waiting for pay day again so i can go out and skint myself! ill upload some pic's later today ____________________ SICK OF SPENDING MONEY!

Put some Kent racing cams in there whilst you've got it in bits. You know it makes sense. ____________________ My Flickr |

No Bud, Not a clue who had been tinkering with it before me, got no service history or anything with it, the head gasket that i took off looks rather old so it doesnt look like it has been done in the past 2 yr or so. The washer is definitely off one of the head bolts but i must have disturbed it by having the full engine upside down .
got my head off ebay, checked all the cams and valves and everything looks a-ok with it so just waiting on some funds for my tensioner and head gasket now, oh and gave the new head a lick of vht satin black to make it look a bit tidier. (i didnt bother painting the old one before because i didnt wanna strip the engine!) ____________________ SICK OF SPENDING MONEY!
